PROS: The Mazda6 Estate 2.2 Sport Diesel offers a great driving experience, good levels of equipment, superb practicality and very good fuel economy.
CONS: The looks are not to everyone's tastes and the ride and refinement could be better.
The 2.2-litre diesel engine is powerful, offering 180bhp at 3500rpm and 295lb-ft of torque low down in the rev range. 0-62mph takes a brisk 8.7 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 134mph.
The 6 is truly excellent to drive for a car of its type. The chassis is nicely balanced, there is plenty of front end grip, the brakes offer good feel and the gear-change is superbly worked out.
The only downside is the firm suspension which can make longer journeys uncomfortable. Pity.
The Mazda6 Estate 2.2 Sport Diesel is a very good looking car although its looks are arguably an acquired taste. The exterior is festooned with styling details and looks a little bit busy, but the car cuts an attractive profile.
On the inside, the cabin is stylishly appointed and well made but there are a bewildering number of buttons on the centre console and this can be confusing until you've properly got to grips with the car.
Mazda is known for giving you a lot of kit for your money and the Mazda6 Estate 2.2 Sport Diesel comes with an impressive list of standard equipment including dual-zone climate control, cruise control, front fog lights, parking sensors, automatic wipers, 18-inch alloy wheels, half-leather trim, Bose eight-speaker hi-fi, tyre pressure monitoring, and xenon headlights.
Interior space is impressive. There is plenty of space inside for passengers, although taller rear passengers will notice a slight lack of rear headroom. The boot holds a very good 519-litres with the seats in place, expanding to 1751-litres with the seats folded down. The boot-lip is low and the luggage space is flat, making loading and unloading a breeze.
Reliability shouldn't be an issue - Mazda have an enviable reputation for reliability.
The Mazda6 Estate 2.2 Sport Diesel offers a range of driver aids and an extensive suite of airbags, meaning that safety should not be an issue. The 6 also scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP tests.
At £24,330, the Mazda6 Estate 2.2 Sport Diesel is the most expensive car in the Mazda6 Estate range and most buyers will plump for the cheaper TS2 which has the same engine but a less extensive range of standard kit.
Running costs should be low thanks to the parsimonoius diesel engine which produces just 143g/km of CO2 and returns 52.3mpg. This means cheap VED under band F.
