The Mazda6 is a large family car without the high prices of those delivered by BMW and Mercedes, and there are certainly no complaints about the space in the car. The driving experience from the car is quite good for a big car, and although the refinement isn’t quite up there with the premium brands, it is still a comfortable car too.

PROS:  The 2.0 litre engine delivers good performance, the fuel performance is not much worse than the smaller engines, and the TS2 trim delivers some nice extras.

CONS:  This is quite a lot of money to pay for this vehicle, and those who are interested in fuel performance will find that the diesel options are a lot more efficient.

Behind the Wheel

The handling of the car is very good for a Mazda, and the Mazda6 feels agile and the steering is light, and even going into corners the car feels as though it has plenty of grip. The cabin is generally quiet, but there is a little wind noise that does make it into the cabin at speed. In terms of the driving position, Mazda have delivered a comfortable driving position with good forward and rearward vision, and the adjustable seats and steering wheel means most people will be able to find a comfortable position.

The engine performance is quite good considering the size of the Mazda6, and the acceleration from 0-62mph is a comfortable 10.3 seconds. The top speed of 134mph means that it will be well within its comfort zone cruising on the motorway.

Looks & Equipment

The front end of the Mazda6 is dominated by three large air intakes, and the small grille and diamond shaped headlights do make for an interesting appearance. The sleek lines means that the windscreen is quite large, and the car curves pleasantly into the boot, which is capped with a spoiler. The alloy wheels that are included as standard help to complete the look for this attractive car.

The level of equipment may not match its premium brand rivals, but features such as power folding mirrors, heated seats and Bluetooth connectivity are all welcome features included with the Mazda6. The fully adjustable steering wheel and adjustable seat height mean that driving is also comfortable.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

One of the benefits of a large family car is that it can comfortably accommodate five people, and the boot is large enough to take plenty of luggages. It may not be ideal in terms of parking or driving in narrow city streets, but there is always a trade-off between size and space. Many people will choose a larger car because they have to drive regularly on the motorway, and the Mazda6 is comfortable and competent for motorway cruising.

The Mazda6 has been given a five star rating in the Euro NCAP safety test, and includes the usual six airbags that are to be found in the majority of modern vehicles. It also has the driving aids including ESP and traction control that help the driver in poor driving conditions and are vital in keeping all four wheels on the road. Mazda have a reputation for making reliable cars, and there is no reason to think that the Mazda6 is any different.

Value for Money

For people who are insistent that they need to have a large family car on a budget, then the Mazda6 is definitely one of the most competitive options on the market. This version with the TS2 trim comes with a range of extras that make long journeys more comfortable yet still keeps the list price competitive at £20,655. This is significantly less than what people can pay for some of the Mazda's premium rivals that offer a similar level of trim.

In terms of the fuel performance, this 2.0 litre engine is able to offer quite good performance achieving an average 40.9mpg. The insurance group is good for a car of this size, but the Mazda6 is prone to steep depreciation. The car is supplied with Mazda’s typical package of a three year warranty and three year’s breakdown cover, which is fairly average for what people can expect from the vehicles in this class.
