The Mazda6 has it all. It’s a family car which is not just practical but has great looks, masses of equipment and is great to drive too. There is no good reason not to buy the Mazda6 estate.

PROS:  Great looks, great to drive, impressive level of standard kit, excellent value for money.

CONS:  The ride is a little firm, refinement is an issue, the interior is a little cluttered.

Behind the Wheel

The 2.0-litre petrol engine delivers 155bhp at 6200rpm and 142lb-ft of torque at 4500rpm. This gives a 0-62mph time of 10.4 seconds and a top speed of 131mph.

The Mazda6 handles like a dream. The steering, which is perfectly weighted and gives good driver feedback, makes the 6 great fun to drive. The brakes offer great bite and feel and the gear-change is slick and crisp. However, the suspension is a tad too firm - it's not jarring or harsh, we just wish Mazda had softened the springs a little. Refinement could also be better and a fair bit of wind noise infiltrates the cabin at higher speeds.

Looks & Equipment

The Mazda6 is quite exciting looking, but it could be argued that it’s trying a bit too hard, and can appear fussy with all the scoops, vets, lines and spoilers. The sharply sloping tailgate is a nice touch and doesn't affect cabin space too much.

The interior is stylish and well made but a little fussy. It doesn’t look bad or messy, it just takes a while to learn your way around the cabin. Thanks to the excellent level of standard kit, the dash is a bit of a button-fest but once you have got your head around the sheer number of buttons, using the 6 is very easy. Everything is within easy reach and the ergonomics are spot on.

The TS2 includes 17-inch alloys, front fog lights, parking sensors all round and automatic wipers, CD, Bluetooth, MP3 connectivity, cruise control, electric windows and climate control. Metallic paint will cost an extra £420 and leather seats will set you back a further £120.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Mazda6 is a highly practical car and one of the best in its class. The boot will hold a good 519 litres and folding the seats downs will give you 1751 litres which is brilliant. On top of that the boot is easy to load. The seats fold down really easily too, to give a completely flat bay floor. There is plenty of cabin space too and easily room for four or five, if whoever gets stuck in the middle doesn’t have long legs!

Mazda have an unblemished repuation for the reliability of their cars and the 6 promises to offer rock-solid reliability.

Winning 5 stars in the EuroNCAP crash tests, the Mazda6 is a very safe car with plenty of safety kit including traction control, electronic stability programme, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. There are plenty of airbags as well; in the front you get curtain and side airbags and curtain bags in the rear. There are also three-point seatbelts for everyone plus Isofix mountings too.

Value for Money

The Mazda6 Estate 2.0 TS2 is a brilliant car, but depreciates steeply thanks to its unconventional badge. The engine delivers 40.4mpg and CO2 emissions are 161g/km. While these are not exactly high, the diesel model offers far superior economy and is just over a grand more expensive, making it the better bet for company car drivers and private owners alike. The list price of £21,305 is highly reasonable considering the amount of car that you get.
