This Mazda6 is a left-field choice in the large family car sector and offers good looks, superb reliability and good refinement.

PROS:  The car looks good and the diesel engine performs well.

CONS:  The rear spoiler gets in the way and there is limited headroom in the rear.

Behind the Wheel

The 2.2-litre diesel engine produces 163bhp at 3500rpm and 266lb-ft of torque at 1800rpm. 0-62mph takes 9.2 seconds and the top speed is 132mph. This is similar to the petrol engine stats for this model, the petrol version being ever so slightly quicker with a 137mph top speed and 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds. The diesel engine offers so much torque low down that it actually makes more sense than the petrol model.

The diesel engine can be a bit loud but, apart from this, the Mazda6 2.2 TS2 is a very comfortable car with a good ride and good levels of refinement. The suspension has to work harder in this diesel model because of the engine's extra weight and because of this, the ride does suffer but it isn't too much of an issue.

Looks & Equipment

This latest Mazda6 looks sharp and handsome. The rear spoiler gives the car a sporty look but it does have a detrimental effect on rear visibility.

In the cabin there are some nice finishes, with silver ringed dials and soft touch plastics. On top of that the cabin is also comfortable and spacious. Although taller passengers' heads will more than likely be in contact with the roof lining.

Kit wise, the TS2 comes with front and rear parking sensors and Hill Hold Assist, cloth trim (leather seats are a £1200 option), power steering, central locking, alloy wheels, climate control, electric mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, Bluetooth, MP3
connectivity and a stereo with CD player. A metallic paint finish is an option for an extra £420.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Practicality wise, this car is great. The 510-litre boot offers plenty of space and
the Mazda6 2.2 TS2 isn’t far off its main rivals, the Ford Mondeo and the Vauxhall Insignia. Fold the seats down, however, and this car beats its rivals hands down, holding 1702 litres.

Mazda have built up a good reputation when it comes to reliability. The new Mazda6 has not been around for that long but reliability should not be an issue.

Like all large family cars, the Mazda has been through the EuroNCAP crash tests in which it scored 5 stars, however, it only scored 77% in adult occupation protection. It was noted that there was a risk of damage to the knees of the driver and front passenger in a frontal impact. On top of that it only rated the car as marginal in the whiplash test. However the Mazda6 did much better in the child occupant protection test.

The safety kit in the Mazda6 includes front, side and curtain airbags, traction control, and brake assist as standard, unlike some of its competitors, Mazda doesn’t charge you extra for high quality safety.

Value for Money

The 2.2 diesel engine gives 52.3mpg which is pretty good and CO2 emissions of 142g/km put the Mazda6 2.2 TS2 into VED band F - also pretty reasonable.

At £21,830, the Mazda is also superb value, undercutting its rivals from BMW and Mercedes comfortably.
