Volkswagen may have thought it was tapping into a new market; however it appears it has a foot in each camp without being completely committed to either. For a person who wants a Golf there are cheaper options available and the extra space won’t appeal to them, and for those in the market for a people carrier this Golf Plus SE 2.0 TDI is not going to big enough.
PROS: The top of the range Golf Plus delivers the best performance and ride quality of any of the Golfs currently on the market. It has plenty of extras that are not available on other models.
CONS: The high price of the Golf Plus SE 2.0 TDI will put many people off. The less powerful diesels in the range are cheaper to run and provide better fuel economy.
Compared to other Golfs the Golf Plus SE 2.0 TDI delivers mediocre fuel economy. At just 51.4mpg the Plus is far less efficient than its competitors. The cheaper Golf BlueMotion 2.0 TDI returns economy figures of 65.7mpg. This may seem an unfair comparison when you consider that the BlueMotion is marketed as a green choice, however the BlueMotion also outperforms the Plus - getting from 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds while the Plus 2.0 TDI can only manage it in 9.8 seconds.
The extra size and weight of the Golf Plus 2.0 TDI has also had a negative effect on its handling. The Plus has a tendency to lean when cornering, mainly due to its extra height. It is also less responsive and nimble than other Golf models. Golf purists might find the handling disappointing, but it might still appeal to those who grew up with the Golf and now have a growing family. One plus point is that the extra size mean that the ride is a lot smoother, which when combined with the quiet engine makes for a comfortable ride.
Although Volkswagen has increased the size of the Golf Plus 2.0 TDI it still retains the iconic shape and style of the Golf. The added size inside has added to the comfort. This SE version also features a touch screen console, which adds to the overall quality of the interior.
The SE version of the Golf Plus 2.0 TDI has an extensive number of features as standard. These include air conditioning, cruise control, a multi functioning computer, CD player, front and rear windows as well as alloy wheels. The most impressive feature on the Golf Plus is Park Assist System; this feature actually helps the driver to Parallel Park into even the trickiest of spaces.
The Golf Plus 2.0 TDI scored the maximum available five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, which is to be expected from a car of this quality, price and size.
The extra space in the Golf Plus 2.0 TDI makes it a great choice for a family car. Although the smaller Golfs are not short of space this new version has five well sized seats and a much bigger boot.
There is definitely enough space to hold five full sized adults. The rear seats also fold forward so that there is extra storage space when carrying large loads. The position of the rear seats can also be adjusted depending on whether you need more space for rear passengers or a bigger boot.
Volkswagen provides a three year 60,000 mile warranty which is backed up by Volkswagen’s reputation for reliability and build quality which is amongst the best in the industry.
The running costs of the Golf Plus 2.0 TDI are much higher than the other Golfs in the range. As well as the higher fuel consumption, the high emissions of 144g/km put it into road tax band F, one of the more expensive bands for a car of this size. When you add all this up with the higher purchase price of £23,953, the Golf Plus 2.0 TDI will put a lot of potential buyers off. The BlueMotion 2.0 TDI is on sale at £21,500 and is much cheaper to run.
