CarSite Verdict:  3/5
This is a good sized car for families as it seats five occupants and has plenty of boot space. The fuel economy is good, although the Bluemotion's efficiency is better.

The S trim level is basic, but still comes with the essentials and the price is good, although you shouldn't expect anything exciting from the engine, which is pretty slow.

PROS:  The cheapest of the Golf Plus range, the S 1.2 TSI is a practical hatchback with loads of room and all the essentials offered with the basic trim level.

CONS:  The trim level is basic and the Golf Plus is only worth the extra cost over the regular Golf is you really need the extra boot space.

Behind the Wheel

The Golf Plus delivers an excellent driving experience and is a lot of fun, with sharp and responsive handling. The ride is a smooth and comfortable one, and most notably much more refined than that of its predecessor, with very little noise intrusion. The car also deals with most potholes and road imperfections fairly well.

However the engine can be slightly noisier than the standard Golf and there is a little more body roll.

The top speed is 108 mph and the S 1.2 TSI takes 13.4 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph. The cars power output is weak at 84bhp and its torque is also small at 118 lb-ft.

Looks & Equipment

The basic trim S does not offer as much as the SE, but still comes with most essentials.

Alloy wheels can be purchased for £450 and metallic paint is available for £465.

Air conditioning is fitted, but climate control is not available. Electric door mirrors and electric front windows are standard.

The in-car entertainment is limited to a CD player. However, MP3 connectivity is available for £100, but otherwise the car is very basic in terms of standard equipment. Leather seats, Bluetooth and satallite navigation are all unavailable.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The car's security is lacking in that an alarm is not fitted as standard, but is available for an additional £230. However, central locking is fitted as standard. The car is also fitted with a driver, passenger and front side airbag as standard.

The Golf Plus is a practical car with a little extra room over the regular Golf hatchback. It seats five occupants and has five-door access. The boot space is also generous with 395 litres offered when the rear seats are upright and when the rear seats are folded there is 1,450 litres available.

In terms of reliability, this car is covered under warranty for three years and up to 60,000 miles.

Value for Money

The Volkswagen Golf Plus S 1.2 TSI 5dr costs £17,030. Drivers will be rewarded with good fuel efficiency and most of the essentials within the cabin.

The model produces 136 g/km of CO2 emissions and the car's fuel consumption is minimal as the car performs on average at 48.7 mpg. The fuel economy is good, but the Bluemotion's efficiency and low CO2 emissions are much better, if low running costs are a priority.

The S level trim is very basic and the 1.2 engine is not the most exciting in the Golf Plus range, but this car is a great cheap option with high levels of practicality.
