The Golf Plus sits between the standard Golf hatchback and the Touran. The Golf Plus offers good passenger space, practicality, performance, and economy ideal for families looking for a medium-sized hatchback. Build quality is excellent and its reliability and quality are without question.

PROS:  Good passenger space, superb build quality, good economical engine, VW reliability.

CONS:  Not as popular as the standard Golf hatchback, doesn’t really offer anything extra over the standard car.

Behind the Wheel

Inside the cabin it’s reminiscent of the previous Golf Plus, although this version feels more upmarket. The driver’s seat and steering wheel have plenty of adjustment, so finding the perfect driving position is an easy task for everyone. Visibility is excellent all round. The dash is well designed and everything you need is within reach and easy to use.

The Golf Plus SE 2.0 TDI (140ps) has a top speed of 127mph and will do 0-62mph in 9.8 seconds. Combined fuel economy is good at 55.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 132g/km are about average for its class. It’s smooth but potent and pulls well with 236lb-ft of torque low-down the rev range.

Driving the Golf Plus is a pleasure: its sharp handling, well weighted steering and positive gear-changes make progress easy. Body roll is well checked, even though it’s a little taller than most standard hatches, and it’s composed and surefooted when cornering. Potholes and bumps are soaked up by its suspension without fuss and the ride is smooth and comfortable.

At motorway speeds, wind and road noise are well suppressed and the engine is smooth and quiet. The Golf Plus makes an ideal family cruiser for long distance journeys thanks to its refined and comfortable ride.

Looks & Equipment

Like the standard Golf, the Golf Plus is conservatively styled. This version is really a tweaked version of the original Golf Plus, which now includes a new grille and sharper looks, with increased space and a more sophisticated cabin interior.

The Golf Plus SE is well equipped for its price. Standard equipment fitted includes power steering, central locking, 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, rain sensitive wipers, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, parking assist, rear parking sensor, alarm, immobiliser, MP3 connectivity, CD and Bluetooth.

VW also offer optional extras such as climate control £790, metallic paint £465, leather seats £2,035 and satellite navigation £1,780.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Golf Plus actually offers more boot space than the regular Golf hatchback. There are 395-litres of space available with the rear seats in place and that can be boosted to 1,450-litres with the rear seats folded down. This SE version also offers a variable height boot floor to make load carrying even easier. Rear passenger seats are also sliding so you can sacrifice boot space for rear legroom and vice versa. There’s impressive space for rear passengers which makes it ideal for family use. The fitting of child seats is made easier by the rear seats being raised up.

Parking assist is also fitted as standard so parking is a doddle.

EuroNCAP haven’t crash-tested the Golf Plus yet, but it’s based on the Golf which received the maximum rating of five-stars for safety. All versions come with front, side and curtain airbags for all occupants. It also includes active head restraints to protect against whiplash and ISOfix child seat anchor points.

Volkswagen is synonymous with quality and reliability and the Golf Plus SE is no exception to the rule. Previous versions have proved very reliable and durable with no major technical problems.

The Golf Plus is covered by VW’s three-year 60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Golf Plus SE 2.0 TDI, priced at £22,570, is more expensive than the standard Golf hatchback, but it has additional interior space and is more suitable for small families. It’s well equipped and offers reliability, performance and economy, all with a premium badge – and you should be able to haggle a reasonable discount with main dealers.

Running costs are good for its class: insurance is in group 19, Road Tax is in VED band E and this 2.0 TDI engine is frugal.

Its reputation, equipment level and nice touches like parking assist and a variable-height boot floor will mean that you should have no problem selling it on later.
