PROS: The Clio Sport Tourer is good to drive, attractively styled and practical.
CONS: The interior feels a little low rent and the diesel models offer better fuel economy.
The Clio Sport Tourer's 1.2-litre 16v petrol engine develops 75bhp and 79lb-ft of torque. It's a little bit out of its depth in a car as large as the Tourer, however, and the more powerful TCe unit is a much better bet. 0-62mph takes a fairly leisurely 13.6 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 104mph.
Overall refinement is superb and the Clio Sport Tourer is eerily quiet for such a small car. It also handles well with plenty of grip and very little body roll although the steering is a little over-assisted and vague.
The Clio Sport Tourer is a great looking car and its interior is very stylish indeed. The quality of the interior plastics isn't as high on the Expression model as it is on the higher trims but it is still more than adequate.
There is a limited amount of standard equipment on this model including electric front windows and a CD player with MP3 connectivity. Optional extras include Sat-Nav (£470), metallic paint (£455), air-con (£575) and alloy wheels (£575).
The Clio hatchback scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests and the Clio Sport Tourer should also be a very safe car thanks to a good range of airbags. Stability control is an optional extra, however, at £315.
The Clio isn't massive - it is, after all, based on a supermini - but it offers a decent amount of boot space with 439-litres on offer with the rear seats up and 1277-litres available with the seats folded flat.
Renault don't have the best reputation for reliability and the Clio only rated averagely in the 2011 J D Power Survey but it feels well made and is supplied with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty.
At £12,005, the Clio Sport Tourer Expression 1.2 16v 5dr is the cheapest model in the range and you do get quite a lot of car for your money, despite the low-rent interior and basic level of standard equipment.
Running costs should be relatively low as the Clio returns a respectable 48.7mpg (combined) and falls under VED band E thanks to reasonable carbon emissions of 135g/km. Group 8 insurance should also be very cost-effective.
