PROS: The Clio is good looking, practical and good to drive.
CONS: At £14,000, it's one of the more expensive models in the range and the steering lacks feel.
The Clio's 1.2-litre petrol engine develops a lively 100bhp and 114lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 11.0 seconds and a top speed of 114mph. It's an excellent engine, pulling well throughout the rev range and remaining composed even at high speeds.
The Clio is also a blast to drive thanks to a superb chassis and stiff suspension. Depsite the tautness of the chassis, the Clio remains comfortable even over rough surfaces. It's a pity that the steering is a little vague but this is a small fly in an otherwise highly agreeable ointment.
The Clio looks great both inside and out. The cabin also has a good quality feel and all of the interior plastics feel soft to the touch, making the Clio feel very classy.
Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric mirrors, electric windows, cruise control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, Sat-Nav and a CD player with MP3 connectivity.
There is plenty of space within the Clio and easily enough room in the cabin for four average-sized occupants. The boot is also a good size, offering 288-litres with the rear seats up and 1038-litres with the seats folded flat.
It should also be a safe car and comes fitted with ABS and a good range of airbags. It scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
Reliability may be an issue and there have been reports from owners of some dodgy interiors. However, the Clio should be reliable mechanically and comes with a good 3 year/100,000 mile warranty.
At £14,000, this is one of the pricier Clios on the market thanks to its extensive range of standard equipment. However, it is still competitively priced and should be cheap to run too.
The Clio should return a healthy 52.3mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of 125g/km place it under VED band D. Group 13 insurance should also be very reasonable.
