PROS: The Renault Clio Gordini looks great and delivers good performance.
CONS: Resale values will be weak and it is quite pricey for a Clio.
The Renault Clio Gordini 128 handles very well indeed thanks to its well sorted chassis, stiff suspension and quick steering. There is very little body roll through the corners, even when you're really hammering it and it is very fun to drive indeed.
The Renault's 1.6-litre petrol engine develops 128bhp and 114lb-ft of torque high up in the rev range so you can rev the nuts of the Clio and it'll thank you for it. 0-62mph takes an impressive 9.3 seconds and flat out you'll hit 122mph.
The Clio Gordini certainly looks the part thanks to its sports stripes, twin exhausts and chunky alloy wheels. It's the same story on the inside too and the dashboard looks very stylish indeed.
Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, cruise control and CD player with MP3 connectivity. Optional extras include Bluetooth (£290), Sat-Nav (£470), leather seats (£750), rear parking sensors (£315) and metallic paint (£455).
The Clio Gordini 128 is a very practical car considering its size with 288-litres of boot space with the rear seats up and 1038-litres with the rear seats down.
It should be reliable mechanically but last year's J D Power Survey highlighted some issues with the quality of the interior. You do, however, get a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty included as standard.
The Clio should be very safe and scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
The Clio Gordini 128 costs £14,000. Although this is pricier than a standard Clio, it is substantially cheaper than the more exotic Renaultsport models.
The running costs aren't too bad either. You should average 42.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 155g/km mean that the Clio Gordini falls under VED band G. Group 17 insurance is pretty reasonable for a car of this type.
