PROS: The C30 has been awarded the maximum five star rating by Euro NCAP so it should be very safe. It also looks great and has a stylish and classy cabin.
CONS: The C30 is very impractical thanks to its microscopic boot. It's not particularly economical either so running costs will be quite high.
The C30 2.0 ES has a 2.0-litre petrol engine which develops 143bhp and 136lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 130mph which is very good for a car of this type.
The ride is a little firm but the benefit of this is good composure through the corners with very little body roll. The steering also has a positive, linear feel and makes the C30 feel very sure-footed.
There is very little noise from the engine although road and wind noise become apparent at higher speeds.
The C30 is a great looking car and takes some of its styling cues from the Volvo 480 of the 1980s. The interior is beautifully appointed with soft-touch plastics and quality upholstery.
This is the cheapest model in the C30 range and there is a lack of standard equipment. You get alloys, climate control, electric windows, MP3 connectivity and a CD player. Optional extras include Bluetooth (£275), Sat-Nav (£525), leather seats (£1280), rear parking sensors (£385) and metallic paint (£540). Cruise control in unavailable, even as an option.
Volvo's reputation for reliability is unquestionable and the C30 is offered with a fairly standard 3 year/60,000 mile warranty. It also rated highly in the 2011 J D Power Survey.
The cars boot space is quite limited but that is to be expected from a small coupe. When the rear seats are upright the car provides 251 litres of space, and when the rear seats are folded there is 894 litres of free storage space.
As you would expect, the C30 received the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests.
The Volvo C30 2.0 ES 3dr is available from £14,995. This is a reasonable price for a coupe, but consumers should be reminded that this car comes with a basic level of standard kit.
The C30 isn't particularly fuel efficient, returning just 37.2mpg (combined) and emitting 177g/km of CO2. This puts it under VED band I which is quite high for a car of this type. Group 22 insurance, however, should be reasonable.

The C30 is useless as a family car but if you don't have kids it's a great choice. Good looking, extraordinarily economical and well-made, there isn't much to dislike about the C30.
