The Vauxhall Insignia VXR 2.8 V6 Turbo Auto 5dr is a great car, offering good looks, impressive performance credentials and an involvig driving experience. However, it's pricey to buy and run and the automatic gearbox saps some of the power. Why would you want an auto 'box in a car like this anyway?

PROS:  Fantastic performance, great looks, virtually unrivalled in this sector

CONS:  High running costs, pricey for a Vauxhall

Behind the Wheel

The Vauxhall Insignia VXR 2.8 V6 Turbo Auto 5dr delivers a meaty 321 bhp at 5250 rpm and 321 lb-ft of torque at 5250rpm. This is far greater than the other models in the range and gives the car an impressive limited top speed of 155 mph which is much higher than many would expect from a large family hatchback. 0-62mph also arrives in a very impressive 5.9 seconds.

The VXR also handles very well, feeling sharp, precise and responsive. It's not as good as a high-powered Beemer but it feels very composed and taut through the bends. The ride comfort suffers a little thanks to the stiff suspension but it's not uncomfortable.

Looks & Equipment

The Insignia is very stylish, both inside and out.

Power steering, central locking, stability control, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, alloy wheels, cruise control, a part leather interior and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity all come as standard.

Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in sat nav are still only available for an additional fee, costing £220 and £855 respectively whilst rear parking sensors cost £395.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Insignia offers plenty of interior space, however rear headroom is a bit tight thanks to the car's sloping roofline.

There is 530 litres of boot space on offer with the rear seats up, whilst folding down the rear seats expands this to an impressive 1,470 litres.

The Insignia shuld be very safe, achieving the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. Reliability shouldn't be an issue either as the Insignia feels well made and is offered with an impressive 100,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

Priced at £35,090, this is the most expensive model in the Insignia range and returns just 26.4mpg on the combined cycle. However, considering the amount of performance you get for your money, the VXR could be deemed good value.

In terms of running costs, refuelling will not be the only large expense. Insurance premiums will also be fairly high, falling under insurance group 36, and road tax also falls under one of the highest bands (L) due to high carbon emissions of 251g/km.

Of course, for those looking for a high performance vehicle these costs are unlikely to deter them.
