The Vauxhall Insignia SE 2.0 CDTi (160ps) offers strong performance credentials and excellent fuel economy, making it the pick of the Insignia range.

PROS:  Good blend of performance and economy, handsome looks

CONS:  Rear seats only suitable for children and shorter adults, firm ride

Behind the Wheel

The Vauxhall Insignia SE 2.0 CDTi (160ps) 4dr's 2.0-litre diesel engine develops 158 bhp at 4000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 1750-2500 rpm. This gives the car a highly impressive top speed of 135mph and a 0-60mph time of 8.9 seconds.

The Insignia handles fairly competently, offering plenty of grip. It doesn't offer the pin-sharp reactions of a BMW 3 Series or even a Mondeo but it's pretty good. The ride is also superb for a car of this type, making long motorway cruises supremely comfortable.

Looks & Equipment

The Insignia is a vast improvement over the old Vectra and is very stylish with swooping lines adorning its flanks, offering classy, understated good looks. It's the same story on the inside as well and the interior is both tasteful and robust.

In terms of standard kit you get power steering, central locking, stability control, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo system with CD and MP3 connectivity.

In addition to this alloy wheels become a standard feature at this trim level but leather seats will cost £1,045.

Rear parking sensors cost £395 whilst Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in sat nav cost £220 and £855 respectively.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Insignia is expected to be reliable and is offered with a 100,000 mile warranty.

The interior is relatively spacious and there is plenty of legroom in both the front and rear seats although rear passengers may find that headroom is at a premium.

The boot is also quite big, offering 500-litres of space with the rear seats up and 1015-litres with the rears seats down.

The Insignia also comes with a good amount of safety kit including driver, passenger and front side airbags. An alarm and immobiliser are also fitted as standard to protect the car from thieves and the car achieved an impressive five star rating for overall safety in the NCAP crash tests.

Value for Money

At £25,170, this is neither one of the cheapest nor one of the most expensive Insignias on the market. Fuel economy is impressive at 55.4 mpg. Low CO2 emissions of 134 g/km mean cheap road tax under tax band E. Insurance should also be very reasonable with the Insignia falling under group 22.
