PROS: Good to drive, handsome exterior, quality cabin, bags of practicality
CONS: The diesel engines are much more economical and the ride is a little firm
The Peugeot 508 SW is fitted with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine which churns out an impressive 156bhp and 177lb-ft of torque. It delivers good, punchy performance with 62mph arriving in 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 136mph.
Although the ride is a little firm, especially over uneven road surfaces, the 508 SW is great fun to drive for a car of this type. The steering is also very good and there is very little noise from the engine.
The 508 SW is a very handsome car with clean, modern lines and a very attractive exterior profile. Full marks go to its interior too; the whole car feels very well made and the quality of the interior plastics is superb.
Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, electric mirrors, cruise control, CD player with MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth and Sat-Nav. Rear parking sensors are an optional extra at £255 and metallic paint will set you back £450.
The 508 received the full five stars from Euro NCAP and comes with front, side and curtain airbags all as standard kit.
With the rear seats up you get a decent 512-litres of boot space, which is fairly average for a car of this class, and with the rear seats down you get 1598-litres. There is also plenty of space withing the cabin.
Peugeot's repuation for reliability is very poor and the old 407 did very badly in the J D Power Survey. However, the new 508 SW feels like a big improvement over the old car. We'll have to wait and see but, be warned, buying a 508 now is a bit of a gamble.
The Peugeot 508 SW SR 1.6 THP is competitively priced at £22,175. However, it isn't as cheap as some of its rivals and resale values are likely to be weak.
Running costs will be manageable with the 508 SW returning 43.5 mpg (combined) and emitting 150g/km of CO2, meaning that it falls under VED band F which is good, but not great, for a car of this type.
