PROS: Good looking, practical, reliable
CONS: Firm ride, noisy engine, cheap interior plastics
The ix35's 1.7-litre oil burner develops 114bhp and 192lb-ft of torque. It's not bad by any means but the 2.0 CRDi is a much better bet if your budget can stretch that far. 0-62mph takes a pedestrian 12.4 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 108mph.
Sadly, the ride's not up to much - it crashes and pitches over uneven road surfaces. The refinement levels are also poor with plenty of wind and road noise infiltrating the cabin at speed and the diesel engine never really shuts up. The steering is also a bit numb and there's plenty of body roll through the bends.
The ix35 is a handsome car and manages to look both elegant and muscular at the same time. The interior is also very stylish although some of the plastics feel quite cheap.
You get a decent amount of standard equipment with alloys, air-con, electric windows, rear parking sensors, CD, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth all included. Sadly sat-nav is not an option and neither are cruise control and leather seats.
The ix35 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is supplied as standard with stability control and six airbags.
There is plenty of interior space too with ample head and legroom in both the front and rear seats and a generous boot. With the rear seats up you get an impressive 591-litres of boot space and with the rear seats down you get 1436-litres.
Hyundais are very reliable cars and the ix35 comes with a five year unlimited mileage warranty.
The Hyundai ix35 1.7 CRDi Style (2WD) 5dr is available for £18,245, which is a good price for a car of this size. Running costs should also be reasonable with the ix35 returning 48.7mpg on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions of 139g/km are also very reasonable and mean that the ix35 falls under VED band E. Group 14 insurance ensures that getting cover will be neither difficult nor expensive.

The Hyundai ix35 1.7 CRDi Premium ISG (2WD) offers excellent value for money but it can't quite live up to the European and Japanese competition in the quality stakes.
The ix35 disappoints in a number of key areas - the ride and handling aren't up to much and the interior feels cheap - but overall it's a decent car and offers plenty of grunt thanks to its impress...
