PROS: The Hyundai ix35 1.7 CRDi Premium ISG (2WD) 5dr has a smooth and comfortable ride. It has a generous level of standard equipment and is still cheaper than many of its rivals. It is also surprisingly economical for a car of its size.
CONS: The interior of the Hyundai ix35 feels cheap in some places and its main rivals have a more comfortable ride and better quality interior. The 1.7-litre diesel engine is also a bit noisy.
The ix35 has a 1.7-litre diesel engine which sends 114bhp and 192lb-ft of torque to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 12.4 seconds and a top speed of 108mph. Although the 1.7 isn't bad, we'd strongly recommend upgrading to the 2.0-litre which is a much more flexible engine, especially at low revs.
The ride is a touch too firm and there is a considerable amount of body roll through the bends. The steering is also a little bit wooly and vague - a common problem with Hyundais.
Refinement is an issue and the diesel engine likes to make its presence known, especially at high speeds. There is also a fair bit of noise from both the wind and the road.
The Hyundai ix35 good looks can be attributed to the fact that it was designed by Peter Schreyer, the man responsible for the original Audi TT. Inside the ix35, the dashboard and the fixtures feel well-built and solidly made although some of the plastics feels cheap in places. Part leather seats are fitted as standard and the steering wheel and gear knobs are covered with leather as well.
Standard equipment on this premium model include 18-inch alloy wheels, ESP, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition, heated front and rear seats, downhill brake control, front and rear electric windows, electric heated door mirrors with integrated LED-type side repeaters, glove compartment with cooling function, ‘follow-me-home’ headlamp function, Hillstart Assist Control, reverse parking sensors and a trip computer, remote central locking with alarm, steering wheel audio controls. For your entertainment, the ix35 has a CD player with MP3 and iPod connectivity.
The ix35 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests and is fitted as standard with six airbags, ABS, stability control and whiplash-reducing head restraints.
It should also be a very practical car with plenty of space in both the front and rear seats and an impressively sized boot which offers 591-litres of space with the rear seats up and 1436-litres with the rear seats down.
Reliability shouldn't be an issue as Hyundai have a good track record for producing durable cars and the ix35 is offered with a five year unlimited mileage warranty as standard.
The ix35 1.7 CRDi Premium ISG (2WD) is priced at £20,050 which is very good considering the good amount of equipment included as standard.
It should also be relatively cheap to run, delivering 54.3mpg on the combined cycle and emitting just 135g/km of CO2 which puts the ix35 into VED band E. Group 14 insurance is very reasonable for a big car like this.
Resale values should be very strong too.
The ix35 is probably one of the weakest cars that Hyundai make. This shows just how far the Korean manufacturer has come, because it's still not half bad. It's loud and uncomfortable, especially at...
The ix35 is firmly in the crossover market, and competing against vehicles such as the Nissan Qashqai and the Ford Kuga, it certainly has to make itself stand out. There is no doubt that the price...
The Hyundai ix35 1.7 CRDi Premium ISG (2WD) offers excellent value for money but it can't quite live up to the European and Japanese competition in the quality stakes.
The ix35 disappoints in a number of key areas - the ride and handling aren't up to much and the interior feels cheap - but overall it's a decent car and offers plenty of grunt thanks to its impress...
