Volkswagen has revealed the first images of its new GTI Roadster concept, which is set to make is debut at the company's Worthersee tuning meet this weekend.
The GTI Roadster, which was previewed last week in a series of teaser images, was originally intended purely as an electronic car to star in the video game Gran Turismo 6; however, Volkswagen decided to build the car for real.
Based on last year's Worthersee show car, the Design Vision GTI, the new GTI Roadster is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo TSI engine which develops 496bhp and 406lb-ft of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed DSG gearbox, powering the car to 62mph in just 3.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 190mph.
But it's the GTI Roadster's looks which we're most interested in. There are a few classic Golf GTI styling cues -- namely the headlights and the honeycomb grille -- however, that's where the similarities end. It's a truly bonkers-looking thing, thanks mainly to it huge rear wing, carbon sills, 20-inch alloy wheels and floating C-pillars which double up as roll-over bars.
Unfortunately -- although, it has to be said, somewhat expectedly -- the GTI Roadster will not be going into production. However, GT6 players will be able to download the car from mid-June.
