Volkswagen has released official teaser sketches of a radical new concept, which is set to make its debut at the Worthersee festival in Austria next week.

Called the GTI Roadster, the new two-seater was originally intended to be a purely virtual creation for inclusion in the Gran Turismo video game; however, so positive was the response to the car that Volkswagen has decided to turn it into an actual concept.

The GTI Roadster takes much of its inspiration from the Design Vision GTI concept revealed at last year's Worthersee show. Although details are scarce at the moment, Volkswagen has confirmed that the cat will be powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine developing 496bhp and 665lb-ft of torque. As a result, it's claimed that the car will be capable of 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 186mph. The power is sent to all four of its 20-inch wheels through a seven-speed DSG gearbox.

It's a striking looking thing, too, thanks its roofless, wedge-shaped body and massive rear wing, while on the inside there's carbon fibre aplenty, sports seats with race harnesses and a distinctive steering wheel design.

If you're a gamer, you'll be able to download the car from today, while the rest of us will have to wait until 28 May for the Worthersee festival to begin.
