The Volkswagen Beetle Dune concept has been revealed at the Detroit Motor Show.
The new concept is a reimagining of the of the company's original Beetle Dune concept car of 2000 but is far more likely to see production than its vastly more outlandish and unrealistic predecessor.
Based on the standard Beetle, the Beetle Dune gets 19-inch wheels with large tyres and a 50mm increased ride height, giving the car a more rugged, off-road look. A rear-mounted ski rack is also included, harking back to those fitted to classic Beetles.
Underneath the bonnet, the Beetle Dune concept is fitted with the same 207bhp turbocharged petrol engine you get in the production model, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox which sends the power to the front wheels.
The car is finished in 'Arizona' paint and features matte black wheel arch extensions. Brushed aluminium sill panels are also included and, at the front, a large black honeycomb air intake and trapezoidal inserts are fitted. The Dune's bonnet, meanwhile, has been given a raised central section with prominent air vents on either side.
On the inside, the cabin is largely unchanged from the standard Beetle; however, the dash-mounted glovebox has been replaced with a passenger grab handle and the centre of the dash features a high-resolution 7.7-inch touchscreen.
Volkswagen is using the Detroit Motor Show to gauge the public's reaction to the concept.
