Low-priced and more economical than many of the other XC60s, the Volvo D3 DRIVe SE is certainly ideal if you are looking for a reliable car that doesn’t cost the earth to run. Safe, secure, sleek and shiny, the D3 DRIVe SE has it all except speed. So if you’re looking to buy a family-friendly vehicle, this could be the car for you.

PROS:  The XC60 D3 DRIVe SE is one of the cheapest in the Volvo XC60 range, with equally low insurance costs and running costs. Loaded with additional features, the car is very practical and looks smart both inside and out.

CONS:  Like most of Volvo’s D3s, the speed is pretty average, and the torque and power isn’t great. It’s more suited to an active family than a boy racer.

Behind the Wheel

The XC60 D3 DRIVe SE is actually pretty good in terms of driving quality. With a 6-speed manual gearbox, transition from gear to gear is smooth and subtle, albeit a little slow.

For a more driver-focused feel, the centre console has been positioned asymmetrically, so although it can only reach a top speed of 124 mph, the driver feels involved. When packed densely with a heavy load, the 4x4 continues to ride well and can do so for long distances with ease.

The Volvo XC60 D3 DRIVe SE is probably one of the slowest in the range, faster only than the D3 AWD ES model. The DRIVe SE has a small 1984cc, 20 valve, 5-cylinder diesel engine, allowing it a top speed of just 124 mph. Though this top speed is higher than the D3 AWD SE version by 3 mph, it takes a second less (10.3) to go from 0-60 mph, exposing its painfully sluggish pace. This is shown again in the cars power output of 160bhp at 3000, and 295 lb-ft torque at 1400-2850.

Looks & Equipment

The sharp, muscular lines and striking frame show off the Volvo XC60 D3 DRIVe SE’s strength while cleverly disguising its chunky 4x4 stature. A large, spacious boot and cabin create a comfortable interior for the Volvo XC60, so it’s great for holding luggage for long journeys. The leather upholstery makes also makes the vehicle comfy enough for long journeys, and the fact that there are five doors make it easier to strap small kids in and handle said luggage.

The Volvo XC60 D3 DRIVe SE features power-steering, alloy wheels, DSTC stability control, central locking, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and rear-parking sensors as standard. For entertainment value, it has an additional blue tooth, CD system, sat-nav and MP3 connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

As with the D3 AWD SE Premium, the DRIVe SE has an overall 5 star Euro NCAP, including 5 star NCAP rating for occupants, 4 star for children and 2 star for pedestrians. This plus the 3 year warranty or 60,000 miles proves the XC60 to be a very safe and secure car.

Usefully, the diesel engine has a large tank that holds up to 70 litres fuel, which is ideal for long-distance journeys. It is also more economical than a petrol engine and keeps the costs down, which is important when considering the reality of 4x4s expenses.

Value for Money

At £29,750, the Volvo XC60 D3 DRIVe SE is one of the cheaper Volvo’s in the XC60 range. Tax banded in group F the 149g/km CO2 emissions for this vehicle are pretty good, so the D3 trumps again in terms of value for money, with cheaper insurance and running costs than the T6 and D5 models.

Another option for this style car would be the Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES Start/Stop 5dr which is similarly priced at a slightly cheaper £29,065. Both vehicles have relatively low CO2 emissions and torque power, the difference being the model , and thus slight difference in shape.

Overall it’s not bad value. Thought not very powerful, it drives well and is extremely well-thought out in terms of equipment and build. Also, because of the high reliability and safety ratings, the depreciation costs are pretty low, which definitely makes the purchase worth your while in the long run.
