CarSite Verdict:  3.5/5
The GT cabriolet has a great level of equipment and the performance figures are good, providing a fun driving experience. However, the price is quite expensive and the CO2 emissions are fairly high. The Bluemotion is a better bet if low running costs are a priority.

PROS:  The cabriolet comes with a great level of kit and has a strong, powerful engine.

CONS:  Efficiency is not as good as the Bluemotion cabriolet and the price is high.

Behind the Wheel

The Golf Cabriolet delivers an excellent driving experience and is a lot of fun, with sharp and responsive handling. The ride is a smooth but sporty, and fairly refined for a convertible, although there is a little more noise to be heard in the cabin than in the standard Golf. The car also deals with most potholes and road imperfections fairly well.

The engine can be slightly noisier than the standard Golf and there is a little more body roll.

The top speed is 134 mph and the cabriolet travels from 0-62 mph in 8.4 seconds.

The car’s power output is 158 bhp and has torque figures of 177 lb-ft at 1500-4500 rpm.

Looks & Equipment

The GT is a great trim option and includes alloy wheels as standard with an option for metallic paint costing £470.

Climate control comes as standard, as does cruise control, electric door mirrors and electric front windows.

Part Alcantara seating is standard with this vehicle. Rear parking sensors also come as standard.

The GT cabriolet comes fitted with a CD player, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth.

Satellite navigation is not standard but can be fitted for £720.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The car is fitted with driver, passenger and front side airbags as standard as well as an alarm, immobiliser and central locking.

This car is typical of a convertible in terms of practicality, seating four occupants with two-door access. The boot space is not ideal as when the rear seats are upright there is just 250 litres available.

Value for Money

The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet GT 1.4 TSI DSG 2dr is available for £26,595. It comes with a good level of kit and is fun to drive.

The car produces 148 g/km of CO2 emissions and has a combined average of 44.8 mpg. The fuel economy is not bad, and the CO2 emission rate is ok too. However, what is on offer with the cabriolet is a fun, well-equipped open top that looks great. Practicality is not a strong suit.
