MPG: 42.8

0-62 Mph: 9.7 secs
BHP: 145 BHP

PROS: Superbly refined and hushed ride, excellent build quality, good standard of equipment, plenty of practical boot space.
CONS: Uninspiring styling, 1.8 petrol engine is not as good or economical as the diesel options.
The interior is neatly designed although a bit sober. All the controls are well laid out and easy to find and use. Finding the right driving position is easy thanks to the good adjustment available on the driver’s seat and steering wheel. Visibility all round is excellent and rear visibility in particular is better than in many of its rivals.
Fitted with a 145bhp 1.8-litre (Valvematic) 4 cylinder 16 valve petrol engine, which produces 133lb-ft of pulling power; it’s capable of a top speed of 124mph and will take you from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds, which for any estate car is pretty decent performance. Average fuel economy is competitive for its class at 42.2mpg and CO2 emissions are low for such an engine.
The six-speed manual transmission does a good job and has a nice positive feel to it. For people who would prefer an automatic gearbox, there is a CVT (continuously variable transmission) option with manual sequential changing facility.
The Avensis Tourer T2 1.8 V-matic 5dr is well composed on the road, soaking up most bumps and uneven surfaces without any fuss. While it doesn’t offer much of an engaging driving experience on more twisty or winding roads – it remains comfortable, refined and surefooted. It's most at home eating up long open roads or motorway cruising.
Noise from the engine and road is nicely suppressed inside the cabin.
The Avensis Tourer T2 1.8 V-matic 5dr is a real estate car, in which space has been given priority over design. It’s thoroughly modern looking, if somewhat understated, and the interior cabin has some nice upmarket touches and is well built.
The T2 is the entry-level model and comes kitted out with all the normal essentials on a car in this class: power steering, central locking, stability control, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, alarm, immobiliser, CD and Bluetooth. Alloy wheels and metallic paint are available as cost extras.
The Avensis Tourer T2 1.8 V-matic 5dr is big enough to cope with most people and load carrying needs. The interior accommodates five adults in comfort, with generous amounts of head and legroom, while the boot offers a maximum load space of 1,609 litres with the rear seats folded out of the way. Even with the rear seats in position there is a useful 543 litres available. That puts it somewhere between the VW Passat and the Ford Mondeo in terms of carrying capacity.
The Avensis Tourer scored the maximum five-star rating in the EuroNCAP crash-tests. Safety features include seven airbags, stability control and anti-whiplash head restraints on both front and rear seats.
Anti-theft measures include an alarm, deadlocks and engine immobiliser.
Toyota’s reputation for reliability is well known, and the Avensis Tourer is no exception, being one of the most reliable cars on the road. Everything looks and feels durable and well put together. Avensis customers have reported very few problems.
The Avensis Tourer comes covered by Toyota’s five-year-100,000 mile warranty for peace of mind, and with 10,000 mile regular service intervals.
Priced at £19,485 the Toyota Avensis Tourer T2 1.8 V-matic 5dr offers plenty of practical space, a comfortable ride and a good level of equipment. It’s good value comparing it next to the likes of Ford’s Mondeo or Vauxhall’s Insignia.
Reasonable fuel economy of 42.2mpg, CO2 emissions of 155g/km (VED Road Tax band G) and group 18 insurance mean running costs are on a par with others in its class too.
Resale values are expected to be higher than its competitors thanks to Toyota’s excellent build quality and reliability.
