PROS: The most spacious car in its class with an amazingly large boot, the Skoda Superb Estate Elegance still manages to deliver a fair bit of speed from its powerful engine.
CONS: Upgrading to the Elegance 3.6 V6 4x4 adds quite a lot to the list price of the Skoda Superb Estate, simultaneously increasing the running costs, making this a fairly expensive proposition. Also, the design is very conservative and, some might say, boring.
A top speed of 153mph and acceleration from 0-62mph in just 6.6 seconds is impressive for a car of this size. The 3597cc V6 petrol engine packs a hefty punch with torque of 258lb-ft at 2500-5000rpm and power of 264bhp at the same revs.
The handling is good too, holding the road well and allowing you to make the most of the powerful engine. The steering is precise, and the quiet engine and soft suspension give you a comfortable, if not terribly exciting, experience behind the wheel.
The 6-speed DSG automatic transmission is smooth and makes gear changes very quickly.
The Skoda Superb Estate Elegance is not much to look at on the outside, but does offer both high build quality and a luxury feel to the interior.
You also get plenty of equipment included in the list price, including alloy wheels and leather seats, climate control, cruise control, stability control, rear parking sensors, electric windows and door mirrors, central locking, alarm and immobiliser, Sat Nav, CD player, MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity, and air bags for the driver and the passenger and in the front-sides.
Skoda are well known for producing well-made and reliable cars, so it is probably unlikely that you will have to call upon the 3 year 60,000 mile warranty. And with an overall NCAP safety rating of 5 - the highest score you can get - the Superb Estate Elegance is also a very safe car.
633-litres of boot space with the seats up and an unbeatable 1865-litres with the seats down will mean that you have no problems with luggage storage, and the powerful engines will have no trouble with the extra weight when you are fully loaded.
But the running costs of the Elegance 3.6 V6 4x4 petrol version of the Skoda Superb Estate are substantially higher than the lower-spec diesel model, and make this an expensive car to drive. It manages 27.7mpg, has CO2 emissions of 237g/km, and is in the 30L insurance group.
With a list price of £30,755 this car is quite expensive, although with everything you get included, from Sat Nav to premium interior, you can at least see where your money is going. But with high running costs too this car does not offer the best value for money. If it is the ample storage space which attracts you to this car and peak performance is not a necessity, then opting for the diesel engine instead will reduce the costs.
