The Seat Altea XL S 1.2 TSI 5dr is a basic MPV for those who need a lot of space at a reasonable price. It is more expensive than the hatchback, so make sure you really need the bigger boot.

It won't appeal to those who want lots of equipment as standard or to those who like a bit of excitement behind the wheel, as the Altea XL S 1.2 TSI lacks in both those areas.

PROS:  The estate offers loads of room in the boot for those who need more than the hatchback provides. The Altea is offered at a very reasonable price and with fairly good running costs.

CONS:  The S trim is the most basic, which some might find lacking. The refinement of the Altea is not great.

Behind the Wheel

The downside of the MPV's design means that the upsweep of the rearmost side windows tends to create a blind spot when reversing. Wind noise is also quite loud and the refinement could be improved.

Producing 129 lb-ft torque power at 1550-4100 rpm, and 103 bhp at 4400 rpm, the Seat Altea XL S 1.2 TSI has a top speed of 114 mph and a 0-62 mph time of 11.6 seconds.

The drivers seat can be adjusted by height and the steering wheel can also be moved in order to offer the best comfort possible.

Looks & Equipment

The Altea’s cabin is built with solidity in mind and has been created with fine hardwearing materials. Smooth lines make for a sporty finish and the Seat Altea is probably one of the better-looking MPV’s on the market.

The S trim offers air-conditioning, front electric windows, side airbags, traction control and a CD player complete with AUX-in socket.

Optional extras include Bluetooth, metallic paint and alloy wheels.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Seat Altea comes in the shape of a small MPV with adjustable seats to allow for more room. The seats fold flat and slide in order to cater to the users’ needs. The split-level boot is both large and deep in size and comes in at a capacity of 1640 litres with the seats down. The Seat Altea XL S 1.2 TSI offers a bigger boot than the hatchbacks in the range.

All Alteas come with anti-lock brakes as standard. Stability control works to keep the car in check, even when dealing with slippery corners. The twin, front, side and curtain airbags act as extra safety features and the Euro NCAP ratings have awarded the Seat Altea XL S 1.2 TSI 5dr with five stars.

Other things to note are the ISOFIX child seat mounts and the fitted alarm and deadlocks.

The Altea’s VW-sourced mechanicals have been thoroughly tested and therefore shouldn’t provide the users with any problems and the Seat Altea XL S 1.2 TSI 5dr comes with a three-year 60,000-mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Seat Altea XL S 1.2 TSI 5dr is priced at £16,975, which is a very reasonable price for all the space that is available. Running costs are inexpensive too, with a combined average of 49.6 mpg and a CO2 emission rate of 132 g/km.

The MPV is available for cheaper if you are willing to forego some of the boot space and opt for the hatchback.

Buyers who want more equipment on offer will have to upgrade to the SE trim and those who want a bit more power will have to consider a bigger engine than the 1.2 litre version.
