The Modus is cheap, reliable, economical and practical. What more could you want from a mini MPV? This is the best model in the range and comes with a good amount of standard equipment and Renault's excellent 1.5-litre diesel engine.

PROS:  The Modus is practical, good looking and very cheap to run.

CONS:  It's not particularly fun to drive and the ride is a little firm.

Behind the Wheel

The Renault Modus Dynamique dCi 88 is fitted with Renault's excellent 1.5-litre diesel engine which produces 88bhp and 148lb-ft of torque. Although this doesn't sound much, the Modus is not a heavy car and, as such, it accelerates from 0-62mph in a perfectly respectable 11.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 108mph.

The Modus is not a driver's car and tends to understeer if you get too aggressive through the corners. The body control isn't up to much either and the ride is a little firm. However, the Modus is a family car and handling is not its forte. More importantly, the Modus is well refined.

Looks & Equipment

The Modus is a fine-looking mini MPV and looks much more stylish than most of its competitors. It is also very nice on the inside and the cabin has been thoughtfully styled and crafted from good quality plastics.

Standard kit includes alloys, air-con, cruise control, electric windows and a CD player. Optional extras include rear parking sensors (£315), metallic paint (£445) and climate control (£445).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Modus is very roomy and you'll easily seat five adults in relative comfort. The boot isn't but offers 217-litres of space with the rear seats up and 1195-litres with the rear seats down.

Renault have a superb reputation for building safe cars and the Modus too should be very safe, having scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

French cars are not renowned for their reliability but the Modus was developed in conjunction with Nissan and has so far proven to be very reliable. It is offered with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty as standard.

Value for Money

The Renault Modus Dynamique dCi 88 is the most expensive model in the Modus range but arguably offers the best value for money thanks to its good level of standard kit and efficient diesel engine.

You should achieve a combined 68.9mpg which is impressive, even for a small car like the Modus. CO2 emissions are also very low at 107g/km and this means cheap road tax under VED band B. Group 10 insurance should also be very reasonable.
