The Renault Megane Coupe is a great car, both in looks and performance. While it does not deliver extraordinary performance, it has enough power for most road situations. There is enough space inside for four adults to travel in comfort and the boot can accommodate a large shopping bag.

Safety levels are impressively high in this model. Renault has definitely outdone itself and earned the respect of motorists who previously would not touch a Renault. Though still a long way behind the Volkswagen Golf in build and feel, the Renault Coupe Megane is solid enough to earn a place among the class desirables.

PROS:  The Renault Megane Coupe Dynamique is a comfortable, spacious and affordable car.

CONS:  The firm suspension can be annoying in an otherwise comfortable car.

Behind the Wheel

A 1.5-litre, 4-clinder 1461cc dCi engine is the power behind the Renault Megane Coupe Dynamique dCi 110 EDC 3dr. It produces 110bhp and 177 lb-ft of torque, yet remains fugal and is one of the most economical engines in the class. The front-wheel drive engine performs well on all roads, be it narrow city roads, open roads or country roads.

A 0-62mph time of 11.7 seconds is ordinary but fast enough to give the thrill of acceleration, especially on the motorway. It has a top speed of 118mph, which is commendable for its size. A 6-speed automatic gearbox keeps gearshifts smooth and effortless.

Handling is one of the Megane Coupe’s strongest points. It grips firmly and takes corners smoothly, without any hint of body lean. The only gripe about this car’s driving experience has to do with the suspension and steering. The former is too firm and weak for bumps. As a result, you get jolted all over when driving through a rough section of the road. The latter is too light and becomes vague at speed, making the drive uninvolving.

Refinement is top level. External noises are fully blocked from infiltrating the cabin, and only a bit of noise is audible at speed. The engine revs quietly no matter how hard you work it, making this car a great companion on long drives.

You will enjoy great visibility on all sides.

Looks & Equipment

The Megane Coupe has a stylish, modern design. The front-end is sleek and is enhanced by large headlamps and a grille. A sloping roofline meets the rear screen to give the rear a conservative but neat look. The 3-door, 5-seat coupe is low but long and measures 4299mm by 1804mm.

The cabin is an extension of the fine look on the outside. Soft-touch materials and finishes are used on the dash and central console to give an overall polished look. It certainly measures up to the Golf quite well.

The range of standard kit in the Megane Coupe Dynamique trim is impressive. The car comes complete with power steering, stability control, central locking, alloy wheels, air con, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, sat nav, driver airbag, passenger airbags, side airbags, alarm, immobiliser, MP3 connectivity, CD player and Bluetooth.

With such an expansive offering of equipment, you may actually forget about extras. But just in case you want more features, you can choose from these cost options: leather seats for £940, climate control £410, rear-parking sensors £310 and metallic paint for £445.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Renault’s performance in reliability tests has been average at best. Still, the manufacturer has managed to remain popular with motorists due to the styling and appeal of its models. The Renault is sturdily built and feels well-engineered when driving. There is a three-year/100,000 mile warranty to take care of any mechanical problems should they arise.

All the crucial safety and security features are installed, so you do not have to worry about collisions, vandalism and theft. The car did well in the Euro NCAP crash test, scoring all five-stars for occupant safety.

Cabin space is good at the front but squeezed at the back. Tiny rear windows make matters worse and add a claustrophobic feel to the atmosphere. There is adequate storage space in the cabin and the boot capacity is good at 334 litres. Plus the boot is well-shaped and load-friendly. Folding the seats increases the space to 991 litres. The only problem is the high load lips and narrow boot opening.

There are plenty of adjustments for the steering wheel and driver’s seat. Getting a good driving position is therefore easy.

Value for Money

The Megane Coupe is more expensive than the Megane hatchback in spite of sharing a number of specs, but within the class price range. The car also has a stronger residual value than any other Renault and should hold on to its value well.

The engine is very economical, returning 67.3mpg. Carbon emissions are pretty low at 109g/km, and place the car in road tax band B. So you will only pay £20 in VED a year. The car is placed under insurance group 18 and should attract a modest insurance rate. An 18,000 mile service interval will keep your maintenance costs low.
