The GTS is the last hurrah for the old-style 997. It has a wider body and track and Porsche have managed to screw even more power out of its 3.8-litre flat-six. Sensational.

PROS:  The 911 GTS looks fantastic, drives like nothing else on the road and is a supercar that you can use every day.

CONS:  It's expensive and some argue that it lacks the balance of a traditional 911.

Behind the Wheel

The Carrera 4 GTS PDK Cabriolet is fitted with the same 3.8-litre flat-six as the standard 911 Carrera but Porsche have managed to extract a further 23bhp from its engine. 0-62mph now takes an impressive 4.6 seconds and flat out you'll be going 186mph.

The handling is sublime and the widened track and fatter tyres deliver grip by the bucket load. The chassis, as you would expect, is well sorted and the GTS feels electric to drive because of it. The PDK gearbox is also superb and makes changing gear effortless and very quick indeed.

Looks & Equipment

The 911 Carrera 4 GTS PDK Cabriolet looks fantastic both inside and out and the interior is both very stylish and very well put together.

Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, alcantara seats and a CD player.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Soft-tops are never going to be as secure as tin-tops but Porsche makes up for this by fitting an alarm system, immobiliser, central locking and deadlocks to protect the car. Every 911 also comes with front, side airbags and head airbags. Porsche's stability management system is fitted as standard, and anti-rollover bars pop up behind the rear seats in the event of a rollover.

No matter how hard you drive a 911 and use it as an everyday car, it should not cause you any trouble. It is built from the best materials to the highest of German standards. It is exactly the same story with the mechanicals and engine, which should last for years. They only require servicing every 20, 000 miles.

The car is ideally suitable for two people as there is good space in the front, but even children can be cramped on the rear bench. The compact rear accommodation can be folded to make a luggage bay and the bonnet covers a reasonable load area (the engine is in the back). You also get a decent-sized glove box and two cup holders. The fabric roof doesn't rob any luggage space, but it does impinge on rear headroom.

Value for Money

The Carrera 4 GTS PDK Cabriolet 2dr is not cheap at £92,549 but if it was any cheaper, it wouldn't be as desirable. High CO2 emissions of 251g/km mean you'll be lumped into the second highest tax bracket, L and this means road tax will be rather expensive. You'll also struggle to top 26.4mpg.
