With an efficient and powerful diesel engine, the 308 Active 2.0 HDi is the pick of the 308 range. Sadly, it's still not good enough to compete with the likes of the Focus and Golf.

Peugeot 308 Overview

The Peugeot 308 has good road grip and light, responsive steering. It is easy to handle and delivers an enjoyable driving experience. The ride is generally a smooth one, although the car does not cope with road imperfections or uneven surfaces very well. Refinement is very good, with very little wind or road noise to be heard inside the cabin. The engines are also smooth and quiet, particularly the diesel variants.

Complementing the stylish exterior of the 308 is a spacious and practical interior. Head and legroom is decent throughout the cabin of the estate and hatchback models, although the rear seats of the convertible are a little cramped. Boot space is also good for the hatchback and convertible models and even better in the estate.

The Peugeot 308 provides an excellent level of equipment, with air conditioning, electric windows and a CD player all coming as standard. Also standard are alloy wheels and cruise control for the convertible, with cruise control and climate control available as upgrades.

Background

The Peugeot 308 was first produced in 2007, launched as a replacement for the 307.

The model was initially produced as a hatchback, with an estate version made available in 2008 and a 2-door, 4-seater convertible released in 2009.

All versions of the Peugeot 308 received a facelift in 2011, with the updated models being unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

A 4-door saloon 308 was also unveiled in 2011 for the Chinese market.

Summary

The Peugeot 308 is a versatile car which inevitably appeals to a broad market. The convertible offers style and luxury while the estate delivers space and practicality making a practical family car. The hatchback is a capable performer and although other cars in the class do offer a better overall package, the Peugeot should not be overlooked.
