The E-Class is an executive saloon that is designed for those who want a little power from their comfortable car, and the ride ensures that both aspects are delivered. However, there is a little more noise than you would expect from a Mercedes saloon, and the low level of adjustment available may leave some people seriously underwhelmed with the driving position.

PROS:  Considering that this is a diesel saloon the performance is almost on a par with a sports car, and the ride is comfortable and enjoyable.

CONS:  Fuel performance does suffer with the high performance engine, and some issues in the cabin mean that it isn't as good to drive as it should be.

Behind the Wheel

The Avantgarde is probably the best version of the car for those who want the balance of performance and comfort, with the suspension taking the edge off the majority of bumps without sacrificing the feel of the car. The handling is reasonable without being spectacular, and the engine is very responsive under the accelerator, with the power being delivered in a controlled way. The driving position will be quite good for most people, but for many people the seat is simply too high to provide a really comfortable position in the car.

One of the main reasons that many people will be considering this version of the E-Class is that they are looking for engine performance, and this aspect is delivered in spades. The acceleration figures of 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds is exceptionally good, and the top speed of 155mph makes for exciting driving.

Looks & Equipment

The E-Class is the epitome of what one would expect from a Mercedes-Benz in the looks department, and the three-pointer-star is mounted on the front of the bonnet as usual. The typical grille is still divided to each side of the centre, and the low ride position and split headlights are slightly different touches. The lines are sleek and attractive, and the twin exhausts emphasise that this is an executive saloon with plenty of power. The interior is classy and attractive, but the digital display analogue style clock is unusual and may not be to everyone's tastes.

In terms of the equipment available on this version of the E-class, the alloy wheels and leather seats that are included certainly make a good start in terms of this luxury saloon. It is also supplied with cruise control and climate control, along with power heated seats to deliver a comfortable driving experience. The inclusion of front and rear parking sensors and rain sensing wipers confirm the image that this is a premium car.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The space available in the E-Class is plentiful, and passengers in the front and back will find it very comfortable, although if there are three in the rear, the person in the middle may find the large transmission tunnel a problem. The boot space is also good, and the comfort of the car on the whole does mean that it is ideal for those who are looking for a car to drive over long distances.

In terms of the safety of the E-Class, it has been awarded the top level of five stars in the Euro NCAP tests, and is supplied with plenty of airbags including a driver's knee airbag to help cushion the blow in an accident. Mercedes-Benz are one of the main reasons that German engineering has a reputation for being among the best in the world, and this is shown in the reliability of the car.

Value for Money

The list price of this E-Class is £37,715, which is on a par with the prices charged by BMW for their 5 series. For those who are cost conscious, there are smaller engines available which will reduce the price, but the drop in engine performance is also apparent.

One aspect on which the large engine does have a negative impact is in the fuel efficiency of the car, and although an average 45.6mpg is not as competitive as some of the smaller engines, it isn't too bad. The insurance group of the E-class is also quite high, but a three year warranty and breakdown cover does cushion the blow somewhat.
