The Land Rover Freelander 2 is more compact and efficient than its predecessor and is everything a 4x4 from Land Rover should be: great off-road, nice to drive and rewarding to own. This model is one of the most popular models in the Freelander range but it is expensive to buy and rear seating is not as spacious as you might expect.

PROS:  The cabin is light and airy and the boot is very spacious. On top of that you get a rewarding drive.

CONS:  The cabin may be light and airy but space in the rear is cramped and the dashboard is cluttered. With a price tag of £22,755 it is quite expensive to buy, despite being one of the cheapest Freelanders on offer.

Behind the Wheel

The 2.2 litre diesel engine gives 150bhp at 4000rpm with a torque figure of 309 lb-ft. The Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 gets from 0-62 mph in 11.7 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph. The car feels fast on the road and the engine is very quiet which make comfort levels high.

The steering is very accurate and well weighted and the suspension is firm without being uncomfortable. This limits body roll in the bends giving a very enjoyable ride. The off-roading ability of the Freelander is also very good thanks to its four wheel drive which offers stability and reassurance to drivers.

Looks & Equipment

The striking front grille, wheel arch air vents and tailgate all make for a very handsome car and the Freelander is very good looking in a robust, chunky sort of way.

The Freeland 2’s cabin feels very light and airy, with the driving position elevated to see over most traffic. Unfortunately, this is hampererd by a cluttered dashboard and there are far too many buttons on display making it difficult for drivers to operate the controls. Overall the finish of the car is nice with good quality plastics used throughout.

Kit wise you get: keyless ignition, eight-speaker stereo with MP3 connectivity, power steering, central locking, electric mirrors and windows, map pockets, alloy wheels and air conditioning all as standard features. For an extra £305 you can have climate control whilst a metallic paint finish costs an extra £550, and rear parking sensors are priced at £270.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The front seats offer great leg and headroom for occupants but the rear passengers only just have enough legroom, making longer journeys uncomfortable in these seats although the rear bench seat has been raised to give a better view of the road ahead.

When it comes to the boot, the Freelander is a great contender with 755 litres of boot space - way ahead of the 540 litres the Audi Q5 has and the 480 litres the BMW X3 offers. Folding the seats down expands the already impressive capacity to 1,670 litres and this means there is plenty of storage space on offer to owners.

The Freelander received a full five stars in the NCAP crash tests for occupant safety and the car comes with a number of airbags and safety features as standard fittings.

The only real downside to the model is reliability, with Land Rover famous for technical faults and other problems. Whilst the Freelander may feel and look well constructed it is important that buyers bear the brands reliability in mind when making their decision.

Value for Money

The £22,755 price tag is high but the running costs are surprisingly reasonable for a car of this type. You'll get 45.6 mpg on the combined cycle and the Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 emits 165g/km of carbon dioxide, putting it into tax band G.

You also get a decent level of standard equipment for the money.
