Jaguar XKR-S 5.0 Coupe 2dr Car Review - February 2012

For the driver getting behind the wheel of the XKR-S for the first time, the power and the speed may be quite daunting, but the driving experience will soon have them purring with pleasure. The handling is sharp and effective, and the beautifully balanced steering delivers the right amount of weight when cornering, while giving plenty of feedback through the wheel. The driving position is very good with a fully adjustable seat and electrically adjustable steering wheel meaning that all drivers can get comfortable, however the lack of rear visibility due to the small back window isn't ideal.

In terms of the performance of the 5.0 litre V8 engine, acceleration is almost difficult to comprehend it is so swift, going from 0-62mph in only 4.4 seconds. The top speed of 186mph is more than the vast majority of drivers will ever get to experience on the road, but for those who want a car they can take to the local racing track too, then the XKR-S is definitely sure to impress.

The XKR-S is given a different look to the rest of the cars in the XK range, with the subtle sleek styling punctuated by some air intakes and a slightly brasher body kit. The air intake to the front has a chrome highlight, and the aerodynamic appearance gives the car the look of an animal ready to pounce. The large alloy wheels are included as standard, completing a bold and confident look which may not be to the taste of all Jaguar drivers.

Although the XKR-S is a car that is designed to be driven quickly, it still has the luxuries that would be expected from such a car that can be used as a grand tourer. Cruise control and climate control keep the cabin comfortable, and the satellite navigation and hands free phone kit is ideal for the executive who has to stay in contact with their work. Heated power seats and a power folding mirror really gives the car a high quality feeling.

The back seats are so small that they will be next to no use unless people have a small child with them, and the boot space is reasonable, but most people will not be buying the XKR-S for its practicality. The reliability record of cars produced by Jaguar has improved significantly over recent decades, which is supported by the comprehensive warranty package.

In terms of the safety of the XKR-S, there is a range of advanced driving aids which will help to keep all four wheels on the tarmac even at speed, and there are also the usual array of airbags to protect the driver and passenger in case of an accident.

The XK Coupe has never been the most economical of cars, and with the XKR-S the list price is highest of all, at a staggering £97,000. However, those who are buyers of these cars will usually be more interested in the driving experience and the fun aspect rather than the price.

In terms of the efficiency of the XKR-S, it is also very thirsty delivering an average 23.0mpg, which means that petrol costs will be quite high too. The car is also in the top insurance group available, meaning that premiums can also be quite high. One good point is that the three year warranty is supported by a roadside breakdown package which will pay for onward transport and a hotel if the car cannot be repaired within four hours.
