Ford really do know how to build a decent family car. The S-MAX is practical, good looking, cheap to run and well equipped. In terms of bang for your buck, they really don't come much better than this.

PROS:  Good to drive, cheap to run, decent performance, very practical.

CONS:  No air-conditioning, third row of seats is cramped, limited luggage capacity when all seven seats are filled.

Behind the Wheel

The 2.0-litre diesel engine fitted in this S-MAX produces 161bhp and 251lb-ft of torque which means 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds and a top speed of 126mph which is very good for a big heavy car like this.

The S-MAX is very good to drive. We don't know how Ford do it, but they've managed to produce a people carrier which is sharp, nimble and comfortable at the same time. BMW can't even manage this in a saloon car but Ford have pulled it off in a people carrier. Very impressive.

Looks & Equipment

The S-MAX is a fine looking car and its exterior appearance is helped somewhat by the inclusion of alloy wheels as standard. Metallic paint can also be specified to further improve the car's exterior, but costs £545.

Leather seats are not included as standard but they can be fitted for an extra £1,600 on top of the purchase price. Standard kit includes climate control, electric windows, cruise control, rear parking sensors, CD player with MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth. Sat-nav is an optional extra and will set you back £1300.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The car has a good amount boot space. When the rear seats are folded there is an impressive 2000 litres of space, and when the seats are up there is a more limited 285 litres as the sixth and seventh seat are situated in the boot area of the car.

In terms of security, the car is well secured as the car has central locking as standard, and an alarm is also fitted. Both of these standard features protect the car when it is left unattended.

The car is covered under warranty for three years, or up to 60,000 miles. The S-MAX should be very reliable as Ford have a good reputation for building sturdy cars.

Driver, passenger and side airbags are all included as standard and the S-MAX scored five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests.

Value for Money

At £27,195, you really do get a lot for your money. The Ford S-MAX Titanium 2.0 TDCi (163ps) Powershift 5dr is well equipped and should be cheap to run.

With fuel economy of 47.1mpg, trips to the pumps should be relatively infrequent and CO2 emissions of 159g/km put the S-MAX under VED band G which is fairly reasonable for a big car like this. The S-MAX should also hold its value well.
