PROS: The Ford Ka Titanium 1.3 TDCi looks good, is fun to drive and is very economical.
CONS: It's very expensive, not very well equipped and nowhere near as desirable as the Fiat 500 on which it is based.
The Ford Ka Titanium 1.3 TDCi's 1.3-litre diesel engine develops 74bhp and 107lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 13.6 seconds and a top speed of 99mph. It's a good little engine and feels willing throughout the rev range.
The Ka’s chassis though borrowed from the Fiat 500 has been modified. The suspension and steering have been tweaked which has resulted in sharper handling and a better ride. The car is agile enough through the corners and the steering is quite direct, if a little over-assisted.
The diesel engine is always audible and both wind and road noise make their presence known at high speeds.
The Ka is good looking, if a little bland, but offers none of the chic retro appeal of its sister car, the Fiat 500. The interior is very stylish but has clearly been built to a price and there are some cheap plastics lower down on the fascia.
Standard equipment includes climate control, power steering, remote central locking, alloy wheels, front foglights, split folding rear seats and CD/MP3/stereo plugs. Optional extras include metallic paint, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors, ESP and a spare wheel.
Rear seat passengers may be a little cramped but the Ka offers enough comfort for front passengers on long trips. The boot’s size is reasonable at 224 litres. Split/fold rear seats make for a bigger boot capacity of 747 litres with the seats down. The only problem with the boot is its high lip so loading and unloading heavy items can be a struggle.
The Ford Ka only comes as standard with driver and passenger airbags which is very disappointing. It did, however, manage to score four stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests.
The Ka finished last in the 2011 J D Power Survey which is very poor indeed but it is offered with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.
At £11,795, the Ka is quite expensive considering its size and the poor amount of standard equipment on offer.
It should, however, be cheap to run, returning an impressive 68.9mpg (combined) and emitting 109g/km of CO2, placing it under VED band B.
