Those looking for a city car which offers decent performance and high levels of efficiency are sure to be fans of the 500 1.2 Pop Dualogic. The 1.2 litre engine delivers decent performance and there is no denying that it is an incredibly fun car to drive.

PROS:  The 500 1.2 Pop Dualogic offers comfort, style and low running costs and is a fun and enjoyable car to drive.

CONS:  The level of standard equipment is a bit basic.

Behind the Wheel

With 69 bhp and 75 lb-ft of torque, the 500 1.2 Pop is not the most powerful car on the market. This doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to drive however, and what the model lacks in power output it makes up for in enjoyment. Acceleration is decent with the 500 1.2 Pop Dualogic reaching 0-62 mph in 12.9 seconds but models with larger engines are considerably faster.

The top speed is a little low at just 99 mph but around town the 500 is a fine handling car, offering plenty of grip. There is quite a lot of body roll through the corners though.

There is limited noise disruption within the cabin and the ride is smooth and comfortable.

Looks & Equipment

The 1.2 Pop is the most basic of the 500 range and lacks some of the equipment offered as standard on the more expensive models. That being said, the necessities are all there and those investing in this model receive power steering, central locking, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, an immobiliser and an advanced stereo system with MP3 connectivity as standard.

Additional features such as stability control, alloy wheels, air conditioning, climate control, rear parking sensors and Bluetooth connectivity are only available at an additional cost.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Space is at a premium in the rear of the vehicle but, as the 500 is a small car, this is to be expected. Boot space is just 185 litres with the seats up and when the seats are down this is increased to 550 litres.

The 500 is a fairly safe car with driver, passenger and front side airbags all provided as standard features. The 500 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests.

A three year warranty for 60,000 miles is offered as standard with the Fiat 500 and so far the car has proved itself to be reliable.

Value for Money

Priced at £10,645 the 500 1.2 Pop is one of the cheapest 500s on the market and offers excellent value for money.

Those interested in long term ownership are likely to opt for a higher trim level in order to take advantage of the additional luxuries which are offered. However, even at this basic level the car is desirable and that means resale values should remain fairly stable.

With a combined mpg of 60.1 and CO2 emissions of 110g/km, the 500 should cost a pittence to run - you'll be paying £20 a year in road tax. Resale values are also very strong across the 500 range.
