The 35iS is very expensive and although it comes with an enormous engine, it is often too powerful for the chassis. However, the Z4 offers great handling and smooth driveability and has a beautiful, high quality cabin, which puts it ahead of a lot of its competitors.

PROS:  Fantastic straight-six engine, great looks, BMW handling

CONS:  You can get a Porsche Boxster S for this sort of money

Behind the Wheel

The 35iS has the most powerful engine in the Z4 range, but it is a little too strong for the chassis, so a smaller engine tends to suit this car better.

The 3.0-litre stright-six unit develops 340bhp engine and 332lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph.

The Z4 handles beautifully thanks to a balanced chassis, crisp steering and a surfeit of grip. BMW have sorted out the suspension too and the bone-shattering ride of the old Z4 is gone.

Looks & Equipment

The Z4 is beautiful both inside and out. The sleek bodywork and muscular stance make the Beemer a very desirable car and the quality of the interior is typically Teutonic - a model of common sense and quality.

The SDrive35iS comes with leather seats, metallic paint, power steering, stability control, climate control, alloy wheels, stereo, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth as standard, with optional extras including cruise control for £255, rear parking sensors for £620 and satellite navigation for £2225.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Euro NCAP has yet to test the new Z4 but it is a very safe car and comes equipped with four airbags, Dynamic Stability Control inclusive of ABS, corning brake control, dynamic break control and dynamic traction control.

BMW build their cars very well and the Z4 should be very reliable indeed. It should also be practical (for a roadster) with 310-litres of boot space on offer with the roof up and a decent 180-litres with the roof down.

Value for Money

The SDrive35iS model costs £45,330. This is a very expensive car and although the engine has loads of power, it is often too much for the Z4 to handle. Smaller engines work better with the Z4 model, so this might not be a great value for money car especially as it is so close in price to sports cars like the Porsche Boxster S, which is a much better car.

Running costs are also high - you'll get no more than 31.4mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 210g/km mean that the Z4 is in a relatively high tax bracket: K.

On the plus side, depreciation will be slow thanks to the desirability of the BMW badge.

The SDrive28i is a great car, with loads of power and speed, but with the same level of fuel efficiency as the slower 20i. The car comes with loads of equipment and looks great too.
