If you are looking for an attractive family car with comfortable, responsive handling then the Audi A3 1.6 TDI Sport could be the car for you. Lacking the superior styling of the Audi A1 range this model could still be an ideal investment for families by offering low maintenance costs and superior safety.

PROS:  The car delivers strong performance, fine handling, top interior quality with a metallic trim and an advanced safety kit. The engine consumes fuel economically and runs quietly for low levels of driver disruption. In addition to the Start/Stop technology, the car delivers good mileage and low emissions and the Audi brand is known for good residual values.

CONS:  Even with a firmer drive due to the sports suspension, the steering is still very light. The rear seats are ideal for children but provide little space for adults, making it unsuitable for long journeys.

Behind the Wheel

The 1.6 diesel engine gives the car a decent power boost of 103 bhp at 4,400 rpm with torque figures at 184 lb-ft at 1,500-2,500 rpm. The car delivers the best mileage in the Audi A3 line at 67.3 mpg and has decent performance for a family car with a top speed of 121 mph and acceleration capable of reaching 0-62 mph in 11.7 seconds.

The drive behind the wheel is firm and comfortable and its body control and grip are strong. However, the light steering lacks a firm response and gear changes can sometimes feel resistant. Wind and road noises while driving are audible but not excessive.

The front seats are fully adjustable and supportive to provide a comfortable driving experience however taller drivers may find the strut on the centre console uncomfortable as it digs into their knees.

Looks & Equipment

The 1.6 TDI Sport looks very stylish for a medium family car with an attractive exterior and a well crafted and comfortable cabin. While the dashboard looks advanced, it is a little disorganised and many controls look the same – causing some difficulties when operating them. The car comes fitted with high-end driving tech including dual zone climate control, stability control, alloy wheels, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, MP3 connectivity and an advanced stereo system.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Comfort levels can be lowered in this car due to limited space in the rear seats which is only really suitable for children. The car is equipped with a good sized boot which is ideal for long travel purposes and folding down the rear seats creates a stepped load-bay for additional room.

Essential for families, the 1.6 TDI Sport comes equipped with a top of the range safety kit that has gained a five out of five NCAP rating. It consists of standard twin front, side and curtain airbags along with electronic stability control and electronic brake force distribution. Additionally, all A3 models come fitted with deadlocks, central locking and a theft alarm for additional security.

The 1.6 TDI Sport comes with a three year warranty with 60,000 miles. It incurs relatively low running costs as compared to other A3 models coming under road tax band B and insurance bracket 18. With good fuel economy the car has the best green credentials in the Audi A3 line, with a EURO 5 emissions rating and a carbon footprint of only 109 g/m.

Value for Money

The 1.6 TDI Sport is priced at £21,035. Customers buying family cars like this require good fuel economy over speed and low running costs – features that this car delivers. While the car does not provide exclusive driving technology it is stylish, safe and proficient for those looking for a reliable family vehicle.

The car has a well-crafted and reliable engine which gives years of trouble-free service. It continues to pay for itself as it enjoys good dealer services alongside Audi’s excellent quality and reliability. The combination of the car’s popularity, performance and the Audi brand gives it excellent resale values and makes it a potential option for families after a car which is both stylish and practical.
