The ‘accessible’ Aston, at just over £90,000 (V8), gives the Porsche 911 a real run for its money. It could realistically be used as an everyday car, provided that you are able to fund the fuel costs and only two seats is not an issue. The hatchback allows for a reasonably large boot, given the sporting pedigree of the car.

Aston Martin Vantage Overview
It is available as a number of variants. There is the 4.7 litre V8 engine or a 6.0 litre V12 to choose from. Both of these are offered as either a coupe or roadster, with an S version of both the V8 models, offering improved performance.
Impressive handling, with immense grip makes this an agile car through corners, with the S version being even better. There can be a little bit of understeer, and the rear-wheel drive can try to step out on occasion if it’s really being thrashed around.
The interior is beautifully crafted, as you would expect from Aston Martin, to make the exquisitely designed exterior. Easily roomy enough for two, with a reasonable sized boot thanks to the hatchback.
Background
The Vantage name has been used by Aston Martin on a number of vehicles in the past. The first incarnation to feature the name was the 1972 vantage, which was produced for only one year. Since then there have been five different models featuring the Vantage name, including the V8 and V12 model produced today.
Today’s Vantage was first produced in 2005, after first being unveiled as a concept car in 2003. It featured the bonded aluminium structure, and was produced on the same platform as the DB9 and DBS models. The roadster version appeared in 2006 before the coupe received a facelift in 2008. As part of the update, the 4.3 litre engine was redesigned and the capacity increased to 4.7 litres.
In 2007 the designing of a V12 Vantage began, and a prototype appeared in 2008, before its official unveiling in 2009. The V12 Vantage went on to feature in the 2010 game Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit.
In 2011, Aston Martin released S versions of both the V8 Vantage Roadster and Coupe. They were designed to produce a sportier experience with stiffer suspension, improved breaks and a more highly tuned engine.
Summary
The Vantage is an excellent Gran Tourer, with brilliant handling that can still excite you if you don’t pay it the respect it deserves. It’s both stunning looking and sounding, and could potentially knock the 911 off its perch.
