New engines and trim levels have been announced a part of Volvo’s expansion of its XC40 range.

The all-new T3 petrol is Volvo's first ever three-cylinder engine. The latest addition to Volvo's Drive-E engine family, the compact, 156bhp, 1.5-litre direct-injection engine will initially be available with a six-speed manual transmission, with an eight-speed automatic option to follow. The engine packs enough punch to give the XC40 a towing capacity of up to 1.6 tonnes, and 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.4 seconds. This performance comes with a fuel economy figure up to 45.6mpg, and CO2 emissions from 144g/km.

Other engine options new to the XC40 are the well-proven 190bhp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder T4 petrol engine, and the 150bhp D3 diesel.  The T4 comes with all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission as standard, while D3 offers a choice of manual and automatic options, with the latter having the option of front- or all-wheel drive.

The XC40 range now includes Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trim levels, all with an optional Pro upgrade.  Standard equipment on Momentum models includes Sensus nine-inch touchscreen control, satellite navigation, automatic LED headlights with Active High Beam, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control system, Volvo On Call remote control and emergency assistance service, keyless start, rear parking sensors, cruise control, automatic windscreen wipers, and integrated roof rails.

R-Design has a Black Stone roof and door mirrors, high-gloss black grille, front and rear skid plates, roof rails and window frames, dark-tinted rear windows, integrated dual tailpipes, diamond-cut and matt-black finished alloy wheels, R-Design tread plates, black headlining, sports pedals, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearknob, leather and Nubuck upholstery, front seat cushion extensions, LED front foglights, and dynamic suspension settings with stiffer springs, thicker anti-roll bars and faster-acting rear shock absorbers.
Inscription includes Driftwood cabin inlays, leather-faced upholstery, power-adjustable driver's seat, ambient door and instrument panel lighting, powered tailgate, front parking sensors, matt silver skid plates, and chrome grille inserts.

Pro versions of each trim level add features such as heated front seats, larger-diameter wheels, active bending headlights, LED front foglights with cornering function, and heated windscreen.

The optional Intellisafe Pro pack includes Volvo's pioneering Pilot Assist driver-assistance system, providing steering, braking and acceleration control to help keep the car within its lane, and at a set speed or a safe distance from any vehicle ahead.

Prices for the Volvo XC40 range start from £27,610 for the T3 Momentum manual.
