The Volkswagen up! is now available with a new automatic ASG gearbox.
The ASG 'box is not actually a true automatic gearbox, but rather an automated manual transmission. This means that the system does not have the inherent disadvantages of most automatic cars -- namely, higher CO2 emissions and poorer fuel economy. In fact, models fitted with the ASG system are said to be more fuel efficient than their manual counterparts.
The gearbox automatically chooses the correct gear for the situation and the shift points have been optimised for maximum fuel efficiency. On top of this, the driver can also override the system and shift gears manually.
The automatic up! is £595 more expensive than its manual brother, with prices starting from £7,995.
The new up! is available to order now, with the first deliveries expected in October.
