Volkswagen has announced that the new Golf R Cabriolet will go on sale in March 2013, with the first deliveries expected in April 2013.
The new drop-top Golf is based on the outgoing Mk6 Cabriolet rather than the new Mk7 and will become the fastest convertible Golf in the car's history.
The Golf R Cabriolet is expected to be fitted with the 261bhp 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine fitted to the Scirocco R and, than the tin-top Golf R's 267bhp 2.0-litre unit. And, unlike the hard-top, the R Cabriolet will be available with front-wheel drive only.
A 0-62mph time of around six seconds is likely and the R Cabriolet will keep on accelerating all the way to 155mph.
A six-speed manual gearbox will be offered alongside VW's dual-clutch DSG auto transmission.
Volkswagen has yet to announce the pricing information for the new Golf R Cabriolet, but the R is expected to cost around £5,000 more than the GTI Cabriolet, with prices starting from around £34,000.
