The world’s best-selling hybrid car is getting a new style, and new technology for 2012.
Toyota is planning to introduce full hybrid technology across the whole of its core product range, but that doesn't mean that the firm is leaving the Prius, which is still the most famous and best-selling hybrid vehicle in the world, behind.
As you would expect from a Prius, fuel efficiency is the highest priority for the third generation model. The latest Toyota Prius will offer a combined cycle fuel consumption of 72.4mpg with CO2 emissions of 89g/km.
The front of the new car has been given an updated look, to fit with Toyota's new design approach, and the interior features new upholstery, new front seats, and new soft-touch surfaces. In addition to the refreshed design features, there will also be improved equipment levels for the new model. These include the Toyota Touch touchscreen control system, which now comes as standard, and a Toyota Touch and Go Plus multimedia and navigation system which is included as standard on the Prius T Spirit and offered as an additional option on T3 and T4 models. This Touch and Go Plus system comes with Bluetooth connectivity, rear-view camera, USB port and on-board connectivity which allows drivers to use their phone to access online information and services.
Changes to the multi-information display on all models make the images clearer and easier to understand, and add extra functions such as a monthly fuel consumption record with an archive of up to five months and an ECO savings calculator.
The body of the new Prius has been made stiffer with extra welding spots and reinforcements. This means that the suspension can have a softer tuning, which improves the comfort of the ride without negatively affecting the handling. A redesign of the bracing also makes the steering column more rigid to improve the handling, and additional soundproofing materials have been included.
The latest generation of the Toyota Prius will go on sale in the UK in March, and prices start from £21,350 on the road. Later on in 2012 the Prius range will also be extended by the introduction of a Prius Plug-in Hybrid, and the Prius+, which will be the first seven-seat full hybrid MPV ever taken to market.
