Tesla is set to launch a new two-seater electric roadster; however, the new car could be at least five years from production.

The new car is set to arrive in 2017 and will serve as the replacement to the Tesla Roadster (pictured above). It is likely to be even faster than the current model and, thanks to improved battery technology, it is expected to exceed the original car's 245-mile range.

The current Roadster will go out of production this year to make way for the Tesla Model S Saloon which is due to arrive in 2013. Tesla also plans to introduce a smaller saloon and an SUV, the Model X, by 2015.

Unlike the current Roadster, which is based on the Lotus Elise, the new model will use a new platform which has been designed specifically for use in electric vehicles.
