Mazda has revealed teaser images of its new Mazda CX-60 plug-in hybrid SUV.

Little is known about the new Mazda SUV that is tasked with taking on the likes of the Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai and Ford Puma – so far Mazda has revealed a few sentences of information along with a couple of teaser pictures.

It’s enough to tell us the CX-60 will have a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine boosted by an electric motor to produce 300PS, which should be enough for 0-62mph in around six seconds.

That’s pretty impressive for a mainstream family SUV and it’s even more impressive when you realise the CX-60 will be rear-wheel drive, so won’t get the all-wheel drive low-speed traction enjoyed by most rivals.

The icing on the cake comes with confirmation that the CX-60 will be a true driver car inspired by the Japanese company’s Jinba Ittai (horse and rider) ethos, which is also behind the MX-5 sports car. Expect pin sharp steering, well-weighted controls and well-contained body lean that’ll make the CX-60 a treat to drive.

And it’ll be cheap to run. The Mazda’s plug-in hybrid powertrain could allow it to run for up to 50 miles on battery power alone meaning your running costs will be transformed from pounds to pence if you have somewhere at home you can charge the car.

You can also expect the Mazda to be very practical.  The CX-60 will have space for four tall adults and a boot that’ll hulk about enough luggage for a couple of weeks away.

It’ll also be very posh inside as hinted at by Mazda’s second teaser pic. It shows a cabin with stitched textile trims and Mazda’s also promising wood, leather and chrome.

The CX-60 will be revealed in full on 8 March and is expected to be priced from around £35,000. It is the first of four new SUVs coming from the japanese company in the coming years.
