Smart have added a full range of electric powered models to their line up.

Prices start from £16,420 for the smart fortwo electric drive, once the Government Plug-In Car Grant of £4,500 is applied, while the forfour electric drive is £16,915 including grant. A cabriolet version of the former starts at £18,650 including grant.

Smart’s electric drive system uses an 81 bhp electric motor to power the rear wheels via a single-speed gearbox, with a range of up to 100 miles. A 7 kW on-board charger means it can be recharged in just 2.5 hours using a 16 A charger, or six hours with a standard three-pin household socket. All models have a top speed of 81 mph, limited for range optimisation, and can travel from 0 to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds.

Equipment includes heated front seats, cruise control, leather upholstery and 15-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, and smart media system with satellite navigation, while all electric drive model also come with charging cables for both domestic sockets and public charging stations, and an acoustic ambient sound generator which creates an artificial engine sound at low speeds to alert pedestrians to its presence.

An extra £595 sees ambient lighting, centre armrest, LED headlights and tail lights, front fog lamps, automatic lights and wipers, and rear view camera added to the mix.

An electric drive design package is available from £595, adding a tridion cell and mirror caps in electric green, body panels in either black or white with matching grille, 16-inch alloys, and ‘ED’ decals in grey.

A winter package adds heated steering wheel, additional door and cockpit insulation, and, on forfour models, heated rear seats. The winter package costs £295 on fortwo models and £495 on the forfour.

A smart control app allows the user to view the vehicle’s charging status and pre-set the climate control via a smartphone.
