Chevrolet has announced that the Volt electric car will cost from £28,545 when it comes to Britain next year, including the £5,000 grant given to electric car buyers by the government.
The Volt is not a true electric car, rather a hybrid or an E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle). The car can run solely on electric power for between 30 and 50 miles, after which a conventional petrol kicks in to recharge the battery. In theory, the Volt should only ever need a trip to the pumps on longer journeys, with short commutes being powered solely by the electric motor.
Mark Terry, Chevrolet UK Managing Director said: "The Volt is a truly incredible car - the first ever compromise-free electric car with zero-emissions capability. You can use it for going to work and back during the week without ever putting fuel in, but it's also an electric car that you can use for a family holiday."
The Volt has already been winning awards overseas, having been named 'North American Car of the Year', yet it remains to be seen whether the Volt can electrify the UK market.
