The latest version of the popular BMW 6 Series Coupe will feature increased interior space, improved levels of comfort, and a wide range of world class driver assist technology.
A new version of the BMW 6 Series coupe will go on sale in the UK on 15 October 2011. Prices have yet to be announced. The car will have a long, sweeping bonnet, flowing roof-line and set-back passenger compartment. It will retain the BMW 'shark nose', with its large forward-slanted kidney grille, broad air intakes, wide contoured bonnet and muscular wheel arches. Two-part rear light clusters provide the typical BMW L-shape lights with an especially sporty look. Inside these units are LED powered light strips creating a striking night-time look, while the rear indicators and brake lights also use LED units. Xenon headlights come as standard.
The car's length has been increased by 74mm to 4,894mm, with a wheelbase that has also been stretched to 2,855mm. The width of the new car has also been increased by 39mm to 1,894mm, and it has been lowered by 5mm. The fluid lines of its design are said to have been inspired by the movement of water.
Even though the height has been lowered, the new 2+2 BMW 6 Series Coupe provides far more headroom in the front and in the back. Passengers in the back also benefit from more shoulder and elbow room thanks to individual rear seats.
Newly developed lightweight seats include an integrated seatbelt system, and the new car includes Easy Entry function to the rear passenger compartment, which means that you just need to tap a switch to move the seat fully forward. Storage space in the boot is ample at 460-litres.
The new BMW 6 Series Coupe will be available with a choice of two petrol engines when it is launched - the 650i and the 640i.
The 650i is a 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine which is unique because the brace of the turbochargers is positioned in the V-shaped area between the cylinder banks. This gives it a greater level of efficiency. It can deliver a maximum of 407bhp from 5,500 - 6,400 rpm, with torque peak of 443lb-ft from 1,750rpm to 4,500rpm.
With a top speed which is limited at 155mph the 650i Coupe can sprint from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds, but still manages to maintain a reasonable level of efficiency with fuel consumption of 27.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 243g/km.
Meanwhile the 640i features a six-cylinder in-line engine with single turbocharger technology along with direct injection with VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control. This 3.0-litre unit is able to deliver a maximum power of 320bhp at 5,800rpm, with peak torque of 332lb-ft from 1,300-4,500rpm. This allows the 640i Coupe to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds, with a top speed which is also electronically limited at 155mph. The most impressive aspect of the 640i, however, is the combined fuel consumption which runs at 36.7mpg, and the CO2 emissions of 179g/km.
The 640i is fitted with Auto Start-Stop engine technology and an automatic active air flap control behind the grille to help optimise engine performance and reach this impressive level of efficiency. It also debuts a new fuel saving technology called ‘ECO PRO’ mode. With this new system put into operation using the Drive Dynamic Control button the engine management system, accelerator mapping and gear-shift characteristics are tweaked to favour a low-revving, relaxed style of driving.
Both the 640i and the 650i model will also feature a range of BMW's innovative EfficientDynamics systems to improve efficiency, such as Brake Energy Regeneration and Electric Power Steering.
Both models also come with the same eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, with a wide range of ratios to ensure that the car can deliver both strong sprinting performance and refined high speed cruising.
The new Coupe will also come with the highest level of standard specifications ever for a BMW 6 Series car. On the 640i this includes 18 inch light alloy wheels, Dakota leather upholstery, electric seat adjustment with memory, BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation system, rear Parking sensors and xenon headlights. The 650i is the same, but with 19 inch alloy wheels. They also both feature the most advanced audio system that BMW has ever offered, with the option of Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System.
