Images of the saloon version of the new Mazda3 have been leaked online. just a week after the official unveiling of the hatchback version.

New Mazda3 hatchback unveiled

Although details are scarce, the pictures do confirm that the saloon follows the same 'Kodo' design language which is also featured on the 3 hatchback as well as the Mazda6 and the CX-5.

There is no official word on the engine line-up either; however, we'd expect the saloon to mirror the hatchback's engine range, so expect a 1.5-litre petrol with 99bhp, a brace of 2.0-litre petrols with either 118bhp or 163bhp and a 2.2-litre diesel.

Thanks to the new engines, both the hatchback and saloon variants of the new 3 are expected to be the most economical and environmentally-friendly cars in their class.

On the inside, all we can tell you is that the new 3 saloon will be much more spacious than its predecessor. Unfortunately we can't tell you just how much luggage space there will be; however, the new model is longer, wider and taller than the outgoing car, so we'd be surprised if there isn't a significant improvement in luggage space.

The Mazda3 saloon is aimed primarily at the US, Chinese and Russian markets where saloons remain more popular than their hatchback equivalents. By contrast, small saloons have been chronically unpopular in Britain for decades and it's unclear whether Mazda will offer the car in the UK. But given that Audi is having a crack at the small saloon sector with the new A3 saloon, it's not out of the question.
