Lotus is reportedly planning to fight back against the established names in the British supercar industry by producing the fastest and most powerful British car on the market.
Lotus is reportedly working on a Superleggera version of the new Esprit, set to be released in 2013/2014. The new car will have a 4.8-litre V8 engine producing 612bhp. This will propel the Esprit Superleggera to a top speed of 212mph – 7mph faster than the McLaren MP4-12C. Lotus also seems to be sticking to its founder Colin Chapman’s wisdom of ‘simplify, then add lightness’, with the new car being made from lightweight aluminium.
This combination of power and lightness could mean a 0-60mph time of less than three seconds. Lotus’ chief technical officer, Wolf Zimmerman claims that “this car will not be like the McLaren MP4-12C. It will be cooler – there will be more emotion”.
Will the Esprit Superleggera signal a new beginning for Lotus? We’ll have to wait two years to find out.
