If you were to sit down with a pen and paper and write a list of adjectives which describe the Land Rover Defender, you'd probably start off by writing words like 'rugged', 'capable' and 'durable'. One word which definitely wouldn't appear on your list, however, is 'luxurious' because, frankly, the Defender is as luxurious as a two-week stay in HMP Barlinnie.
Until now, that is.
The car you see in the pictures is the work of bespoke luxury vehicle specialist Carisma Auto Design and, as you can tell from the images, it's hardly the last word in rugged utilitarianism.
Called the Carisma D1 Defender, the car features a wide range of expensive technology such as on-board computers, Bluetooth, WiFi and a Bang and Olufsen sound system, all of which move the humble Defender up to Range Rover-like levels of opulence.
The conversion job costs £80,000, not including the £24,260 Land Rover will charge you for a boggo-spec Defender, but for that you get a fridge, a drinks cabinet with lead crystal glassware, dimmable mood lighting and about eight cows' worth of white quilted leather.
But such is the bespoke nature of the service provided by Carisma, you can actually specify virtually anything you want, including a shotgun cabinet (perfect for both outdoorsy types and inner-city drug dealers) or even a cupboard for muddy boots.
So, given the choice, what would you choose: a kitted-out Defender or a Range Rover?
