An extra level of versatility is being added to the award winning SEAT Alhambra, with the introduction of a four-wheel-drive model.

This year's Geneva Motor Show saw the unveiling of a new addition to the SEAT Alhambra line-up, a car which has already won the title of What Car? MPV of the Year in the UK. The new four-wheel drive model is being offered with a 138bhp 2.0 TDI engine and a six-speed manual gearbox.

SEAT Alhambra 4WD cars will join the rest of the Alhambra range this summer, offering the benefit of increased traction on all road surfaces with permanent all-wheel-drive.

The next-generation all-wheel drive system that has been introduced on the Alhambra is electronically controlled to provide optimal driving dynamics. To operate this system an electronically controlled and hydraulically powered multi-plate clutch has been mounted at the end of the drive shaft. The control unit which operates this system monitors the driving conditions constantly, and if the front wheels begin to slip then drive is diverted to the rear wheels within just a few milliseconds.

Combined with the carefully balanced chassis of the Alhambra the firm hope that this will enhance the driving experience, which is already exceptionally sporty for an MPV.

The 2.0 TDI diesel engine allows the Alhambra 4WD to reach a top speed of 119mph, and the car can accelerate from 0-62mph in 11.4 seconds. Fuel consumption of 47.1mph and CO2 emissions of 158g/km can be improved with the addition of the Ecomotive package, which includes brake energy recovery and start-stop engine functionality .

When it is first launched the Alhambra will be a five seat vehicle, but a six seat version is expected to follow towards the end of the year.
